Well, my first base gasket delete

Well I finally did it. I'm a stock kinda guy and if it was put on a chainsaw its for a reason, however dumb. With exposure to these kind of sites and this one in particular I've kinda got curious. I don't know if its growing up or getting more confident with my abilities and others I've decided to experiment a little. My first trip out of the known was to get a saw woods ported by a member, and my second was to try a base gasket delete. I had this carcass of an 044 that I decided to build. In reading I heard an 044 is a great saw to start on so I cleaned up the cylinder and got a new meteor piston. I cleaned up the mating surfaces and put a thin coat of honda bond on and mated it to the cylinder. Before that I tried the solder method of measuring squish and came up with 0.019. Put the cylinder together and tightened down the bolts. Rotated the crank with spark plug in and it rotates freely. Waiting for a few more parts to finish up the build then time to crank her up and see how I did. I'm kind of excited to try it in some wood to see how I did!!

The exhaust hole is about 1/2" , and I plan on cutting the shield back and adding a dual port. Anything else I should do?

Base gasket delete and muffler mod... 2 very easy little mods that punch above their weight class IMHO.

Won't be long and you will be buying yourself a degree wheel, and some tools and will start asking about port timing! LOL!

Yeah, Redfin is going to be my sounding board on that. TM already got me looking at a timing wheel to take numbers off my 064. Life will never be the same!! Lol John, I'll give you a shout in a day or so about the timing....first for that too.

My suggestions are a timing advance (20/1000 off the key) and a low restriction air filter (I like HD-2s), big improvement over the old stock units.

ive built 5 or 6 of them and can never seem to keep one same as the 361 but i have one right now going to mastermind so it will be a keeper

If they weren't so bulky for their displacement, I'd love to have one of Randy's MS441s. They will flat haul the mail and outclass many larger saws. I jut don't like the feel of them. I'd MUCH rather have a ported MS461 or 7910 Dolmar. I WILL have a ported 390xp before too long though as they're just a neat little hot rod. Ported they remind me of a blue-printed 390 Ford or 400 small block Chevy. A lot of power in a near 372/044 package...

Used my ported 385 satrday and smiled so much it took me 30mins to pick all the woodchips out of my teeth. Awesome saw!
