Ugly Stihl 064 overhaul

In keeping with my slacker reputation, I never touched this on Sunday..

Make sure the ring ends line up with the locating pins.
If there's no gap between your ring compressor and piston, it's correct


Slide the jug on

Start the bolts

And tighten it down evenly


Stick on the anti alien probing foil

Gasket and muffler


I start the muff to case bolts to help line stuff up


Tighten it to the jug, remove lower bolts, and bolt up the muff cover

Intake onto the jug..
The tab on the bottom of the intake and the parting line on the top line up with the case halves and parting line of the jug


Because the carb studs are "twisted"



Flywheel on and nut tightened



Oil cap in

O ring

Gears..


Thrust block

Retainer plate and screws

Oil pump drive gear


Brake link and spring


Brake handle and linkage, lines up with 2 pins, E clip goes on after


Hook up the Brake band and install in its groove


And install the spring

At this point the Brake is on, so pull the handle back to release it.

Clutch on


Line up the drum and tang..



Little grease on the bearing

Rim, washer and E clip


Dust cover goes on with 3 screws

Install this limiter


Install this mount...
In full transparency, I put the thing together before I noticed you need to install this 1st because you can't get to the screws with it together..


Set the tank on the case

Hook up the impulse


Start the intake into the airbox

Intake is through



Install the upper av screw


Push in the lower av buffers.
It's easier if you make a gap between the case and tank, that's why that screwdriver is wedged in there


Install the screws to secure it to the case in all

Push in the av buffer plugs

It almost looks like a saw


Al set me up with a new coil wire to replace the gnarly taped up one on here..


I screwed the new wire into the coil and set that in place

Fished the wires into the carb box

Some pushing with a screwdriver, some cuss words and a bit of time I finally got the grommet in properly


Got the other grommet in place


Put the coil wire into its groove in the case


Set the gap and tightened it up

Recoil on



Here's where I'll pause.
When I took the oil coil wire apart the spring for the plug decided to disintegrate along with the boot..
So, a run to the dealer next week will hopefully have me running.

Beat me to it, I was going to suggest that also. Works great!

I do not.
I push it up against the airbox and work it around with a blunt screwdriver and needle nose pliers. If the rubber is in good condition one can be a lot rougher with them than most people think.
I have not had any issue, just need to watch what's happening.

It comes in the gasket set.
It's either ment to keep heat out of the oil reservoir or, as mentioned, a place to hide your goods from probing aliens.
Or Stihls just need their own personal foil hat...
