Ugly Stihl 064 overhaul

It seems my 064 decided to stop oiling the bar.
It still oils the bench, the shelf it sits on, the back of my truck or the bucket of my skidsteer from the case half gasket.
So, I've decided to give it a full tear down.
This will be in real time. It's deer season and im also working on an engine build for my car, so expect this to be like a trip to the Department of motor vehicles, slow, aggravating and totally unsatisfying.

I did order a gasket set, but now that I'm thinking, I did not order bearings...

Now, if you see me doing something wrong, let me know. Being a dumbasś is second nature for me.

So, without further ado, here it is.



Ignore the HD2 filter stuff in the background. I returned it to the condition it was in when I got it for the purpose of this thread.

Remove the filter cover


Pop off the filter, and unscrew the filter base.

And there's the Walbro..


Remove the plate


Pop out the adjustment screw grommet

Hold the throttle open with the trigger


Then hold the tab on the carb while releasing the throttle. That will allow the link to disconnect


Remove the handle screw, pop out the presence lever, spring and the trigger.

Remove the fuel line


A little assist for the impulse line


And the carb slides off


Followed by the gasket and intake boot ring

Remove the clutch cover


The inner dog fasteners


Bar plate

2 screws retaining the tensioner, then pull out the tensioner and thrust block

E clip off, pull the drum and bearing


Remove the clutch, lefty tighty, righty loosey...

And there it is.


And I see there's no washer, #14, in there...

Remove the 3 cover screws and the cover


And expose the nether regions not typically seen..


Well, that probably explains the lack of oil to the chain...

Tip it on its side to pour out the chainsaw seeds.
According to internet lore, if you plant these in the field they will sprout new chainsaws..

Remove the 4 top handle screws


I apply the brake to take tension off the spring, then remove with vice grips.

Followed by the E clip


The handle/recoil screw


And with a twist, a turn, a little prying and a gfy, slide it off the studs with the brake link.

Remove the spring, making note of how it's oriented, because it really only goes 1 way to fit properly


The E clip and pull the brake link/lever off


Pop off the plug wire


And 3 screws for the top cover

Remove the remaining 3 recoil screws and lift it off



Not sure what the deal is with the mutant coil. I don't know much about these..


But, all the wiring is solid state..
So, pop off the wires in the carb box




Fish it through the grommets and pull the whole works out.

Remove the 4 muff cover fasteners


And the 2 muffler fasteners


There's the piston..

Upper av screw

Then the 4 lower av mount plugs

I popped out the pto side mounts for more room to separate the tank and case


Push the intake through


Disconnect the impulse


And pull them bishes apart

I removed the upper mount


The intake

Followed by the jug to case screws

And pull that mutha off.

And here's the piston..


And that's where it currently sits as I'm going to get ready to climb a tree and see what the deer are doing.

Hey Ed - If you have the older style clutch that uses the "winged" shoe retainers, then that style does not use the clutch washer.

That looks like an early 064 for sure, so this is going to be a great build.
