Fixed a HO saw for a HO user friend. He’s taking it to Idaho. Get it good and hot here and tune til it just barely 4 strokes cuz it’s gonna be fatter there?

I will give it a shot…if he will give it a shot. older and hard of hearing. Last old guy I tried to teach couldn’t catch the 4 stroke. I guess I could recommend a tach…
My neighbor told me of a different way to tune saws before I could hear a 4-stroke, he makes it scream outta the wood then backs it off about 1/4 to 1/2 a turn. Not what I typically use, but it's served him well for 30 years and it works.

I like my tach too. You always see a number drop when 4 stroking. Sometimes that's hard to hear on some saws.

I always tune any saw I am not running pretty fat especially on high rpm because from my experience first thing most people do is cut a big rock straight in half then rev the piss out of the saw trying to cut the rest of the wood.

Less available oxygen as you go up in altitude, so yes it will run fatter in Idaho. Same with temperature. A saw tuned lean in hot weather will be very lean in cold weather.

One thing that helped me first hear the 4-stroke was to wear earmuffs and stand 20' from the guy tuning. I think I read that on here. Obviously that won't help him "on location", but if he actually wants to learn, it might help him to pick it out and be able to hear it while tuning.

A good tip is to film yourself, muffler pointing towards the phone about 5 meters away. Much easier to hear the 4 stroking on those hard to hear engines. I think in his case, a tach set 500 rpm below the max rpm specified by the manufacturer will be just fine. Even get one that you can Velcro to the cover so he always has a reading.

I figure the dealers must have a procedure which I think would be to just set it a little fat.
When I worked at a Stihl dealer years back, that’s what we did - if the book called for 13,500 rpm, we set it at about 13,200 to be on the safe side if there were fuel differences, etc. Seemed to serve our customers well. Most couldn’t tell if they were rich or lean anyway.

But I've found out both my 044 and 440 idle too rich when tunning by the book.

Same here. I always tune “by ear” and then let idle for 30 seconds and perform a roll-test. Usually I’m ok, but once in a while that lets you know if you’re still too rich.

Ain't got none. Imagine a 65 year old guy, kinda small, work boots, jean shorts, white work shirt, electrician's belt. ( He's a dang good electrician, has been ours for industrial stuff for a long time when we need help).
