I did one and and the saw doesn't seem to like it. It doesn't pop or kick back but it doesn't like to idle. It is really hard to tune at idle. I set it back to stock and it idles fine, re-advanced it and the idle is poor again. Also the advance doesn't seem to have improved performance.

Would it be worth putting a timing light on this saw and seeing where the timing is? And if so does anyone know what these saws like as far as timing?

Jug is stock KS, I had to make a gasket for the saw and squish is .022ish. DP cover.

I believe it's 27* advanced for most Stihls, with the exception being some early 066/064's, and they were at 32*.

From what I've found, some saws like more advance, and some just don't....

How much did you advance it?

I filed about .018 off the key.

So 27 is stock or 27 is where they want to be?

That is the funny thing it is reading retarded off stock @ 31.5. So by that I should cut the key even more like .010 or .015.

????? If your saw likes the timing where it was, I would leave it alone. Both my 10 mm 044 (KS jugs) liked a 20/1000 advance.

Are you running a dp muff and HD-2 filter? These things can make a difference (I am on both).

In your first paragraph you basically answer your own question.

HD2,DP cover, port matched exhaust, squish at .022 compression is 182.
