Gee, this is discouraging. I will admit I wasn’t sure what it was but gum never even entered into my brain. But, I did think an Ash tree was oak so not a whole lot going for me.

I need to figure out how to ID trees if I’m going to be doing this.

The leaves make it a bit easier for proper ID.

I see all oak leaves on the ground there. Was it straight grained?

I will get an up close picture of a piece but around 167 acres of our 257 is wooded and it contains quite a bit of oaks (probably more than any other single tree). My entire yard is full of oak leaves.

There were so many acorns the ground was like it had acorns for carpet. Lol. Lots of deer but they were difficult to pattern because there were so many acorns and we just bought it so im not real familiar yet.

Still looks like oak to me based on the last photo of the grain.

Im thinking Ash as well. The two photos with just one tree in them are 100% oaks. The bark is different. The picture with two trees in it has the same exact kind of tree in question (on the right) beside a for sure oak (on the left).

Ash splits easy? I must be thinking hickory. Is hickory the wood that is a bugger to split?

OK. I get mixed up between Ash and Hickory. I cut a small Hickory a while ago. About a 12" diameter tree. I couldn't split much of it without multiple swings with my Fiskars X27.
I finally gave up and noodled all of it. The grains held on like steel cables. Lol
But it was clear white wood throughout.
