Stihl MS 461 cyl plug threads damaged

Anyone here able to weld it and tap new threads?

Never seen a series have so many many of the same issue wo Stihl correcting it. Shame. Really like this saw but the plug threads are straight up chit. It's not like you change plugs all that often.

I think Shaun Carr has done many of those. You should see the welding he did on a case half for me - You can't even tell it was repaired.

Shaun Carr did two for me. One 441, one 044. Both were professionally done and run great.

Wolfie, how did the plug threads get messed up? Any idea? I've never had any problems with the plug threads in my 046 Mag. Just curious.

It came to me this way. I suppose someone stripped it and tried to Heli coil it and failed.

That sounds right. Probably used a half-inch socket drive and applied too much torque. I've never stripped one on a chain saw but another possibility might be a cross-thread. I ran into this on a 4-cycle engine. I eventually was able to carefully rethread it with a fresh plug. Not easy, but occasionally it can be done.

Weld and tap.

The 044 had a thread insert that worked for a while, but backed out with the plug. I installed it with Dirko, not jb. Also had running issues so I wanted to fix it right.

No local guy wanted to try it, so it went to Scarr52. I’ll be sending more work his way in the future.

The inserts work fine if done correctly, have 26 saws out there running with inserts in them, been 12 years for some, no leaks or coming loose.

Not sure if an insert will work at this point. They may have taken too much material away in the failed attempt.
