Hi Folks
I scored a nice 10mm 044 today.
Didn't get time to save the picure's before the add was removed... sorry

Serial number is 123721023, red lever, metal badge etc etc.

Got it for a good price and plan on giving it a bit of a run first to see how it goes, then pull it down and port the hell out of it.

Does anyone have any tips, suggestions or advice when it comes to the 10mm 044's?
Is there anything I should be checking when it shows up?

I will keep this thread updated with the project going forward

Make sure that it is properly tuned before you run it. Idle speed shouldn`t change to much (200-300 rpm is ok) if you turn it from on side to the other or upside down. (If it`s more you may have an air leak somwehere.) Maybe have a short look at the piston, (remove the muffler) that it is not scored before you run it.

I will have to pinch myself, the second new 044 thread of the day! I love my red lever 044, my SN starts with 126, so let me start with a few questions: 1) Is it a KS jug? If so, how many + marks?

No, it should not give an 064 trouble, but with a few non porting mods the stock MS460s will be running for cover!

I'll repeat what I stated in the other thread, I would love to see a 3 part process (performance documented):

1) Stock

2) Non ported mods - HD-2 filter, dp muff cover, timing advance of 20/1000 and base gasket delete (squish should be about 20/1000).

3) After porting.

I have heard of 2 possible issues 1) The lower rod bearing is smaller than on the 12 mm saws, and although I have never had a problem with it, I have heard that some may have, and 2) sometimes there are problems with the piston pin clips, and one of my 044s did spit one. It did very minimal damage, and the saw just kept on running, the piston pin never moved (it must have happened before I got the saw). I was never aware of it till Randy pulled it apart and told me it was mission one.

id like to see how my stock 046 does against a ported 044

8 pin sprocket in cucumber wood

Looks good, but I am not familiar with that species of wood. If you can make the CT GTG, please do.

Is that a first year 046? What is the SN? The first year 046s have the D combustion chambers and are generally considered to be among the best running 046s.

When my 044 and 046 (not a first year saw) both had just dp muffs and HD-2 filters, my 044 ran just as strong as my 046. So, I got the 046 ported (Smittybilt) and it totally changed things. Ported 046/460s are strong saws.

Question:
Were the + marks only on 044's?
I have not seem them spoken about before.

Also, what do they mean/signify?

They are on the base of the jug and are thought to signify age I believe

My low hour 12mm 044 is an early one with the slant fins, red choke lever and metal tag. Stock it seemed to run like a stock 2171/372xp with more torque. Just put a dual port muffler cover and hd2 filter on it and seems to have gained 300rpms from those two improvements.
