Well, even my free labor job dried up today. Working on my dad's Cessna 150, replacing piston rings. It's an opposed 4-cylinder engine. When you have one cylinder off, it's always a good idea to inspect what you can of the rest of the internal components. In the first picture, you can see a hairline crack in the skirt of the piston of the opposing cylinder. I pulled that puppy out. :(

Here is a better picture with the cracked piston out.

The crack travels about half way up the thrust face. It's easily noticeable along the edge that is oil burnt......there is my inspector in the top right.KIMG1584.JPG

I hate to find stuff like this, but it's better than the alternative.

Now, let's find a chain to work on while I wait on engine parts.

My Tree Guy was busy near me on Monday.

The first one is a Blue Spruce that was leaning against the garage diagonally across the street.

The second tree is a Red Maple that was next door. FYI, the Crane Operator is 72 and has been doing this for 53 years!

I got the wood from the Maple, but gave about 1/3 of it to another neighbor.

My MOFO 462 was making short work of the Red Maple and did most of the work, that saw is so sweet, but I broke out the Blue Beast (Asian 660) for some of the biggest rounds, and to noodle them, just because I had not run it in quite a while.

How do you like the blue 660? I was thinking about putting one together and decided I have too many saws already..

The Blue Cover kit saw is the newest one I have done, and it had several improvements over the previous kit, most notably a carb that has a mechanical arm for fast idle (automatically goes on with the choke and comes off when you blip the throttle).

This particular saw has a ported Cross cylinder with a Meteor piston and she runs real nice.

She has a little more vibration than stock 660s, so I may try replacing the vibration dampeners with OEM to see if that cures it.

IIRC the chain adjuster was also less problematic. As I have stated previously, I always flush all the bearings with WD-40 and replace the piston pin bearing with OEM.

Good eye on finding that. Continental O-200?

Groundi and I bucked a bunch of large oak logs today. We were on site about 6 hours and probably 4 hours at full throttle. Noodled a lot too.
These were laying on the ground for about 10 months so the bark/dirt had to be cleaned off of them. Some of the logs were close to 3' diameter and the smallest ones were in the 15" range. Used MS180, 024, MS460 with 28' bar, MS660 with a 30" bar. Land owner had an MS260 I sharpened up for him. We cut them to 14" to fit well in his smoker. (he smokes a lot of meat)
We are so whupped.

Very nice, looks like a lot of wood in that tree. Would likely also be good for milling? Here in the NE, that is what jumps into my head when I see something that big and straight.
The bottom third would have been good but the upper portion had lots of limbs. I've never milled anything but I imagine with all the knots it would be hard to keep a cut straight.

Not with a guide, and it would make a real interesting pattern I'm sure!

Installed some 4" thick Red Oak legs on a half round Chestnut Oak bench. Then went for a hike with my Daughter and found a nice shed antler.
