My Shiny 500 Started cutting today fine, it then started to bog down in the cut, this got worse and worse until it now bogs down then stalls. So idles fine, pull the trigger it reeves up then just dies. It seems to be harder to start.
Playing with the high speed jet does not help.
did not even get through 1/2 a tank.
Have read that fuel can be a problem, fuel was 3 moths old, and this was the first day of cutting in 3 months, that said the saw emptied and run dry prior to storage.
I orderd a carb kit today as the saw is new to me and I have no idea when it was last serviced.
Will try new fuel tomorrow. -
New fuel did not fix. Still bogging down Initially bogging down in the wood but then just bogging down after it hits max revs.

Any input appreciated

Had the same issue with a little 2040 the other day. Cleaned the carb and problem solved. So that might be all it needs.

My guess, carburetor, sounds like it's running out of fuel.

Judging by how lean that old horizontal engine screams at start up, I'm bettin that top end is cooked

Thanks for the replies.
1. not the tank breather
2. not the fuel pick up filter
3. not fuel hose.
4. cylinder and bore look fine: smooth as a babies bum.
It was the mesh filter inside the carb was full of Saw dust.
So this is a bit of a WTF for me. how does saw dust get past the pick up filter, ( felt filter Infront of a extremely fine mesh) ?.
I'm no small engine guy but i'm pretty sure that any dust in the air that is ingested by the engine, will obviously go through the carb, but it shouldn't end up in the fuel filter screen in the carb, yeah?
So where is it coming from????
Looking forward to some insight from the brains trust.
thanks and Regards,
Rein.

I have seen that a time or two.I don't know how it gets in there, but when I find that I check out the whole fuel system and replace whatever doesn't look right.

yes looked a lot like that.
Its new to me and is a 30 year old saw so god knows what its history, aside from mostly sitting on the shelf.
I have a new pick up and the fuel hose looks fine.

Sweet that thing sounds good. The sound that alarmed me is still there but now it's obvious it's the audio quality and not the saw.

I had the same thing happen to an 066 I rebuilt, I took it out to test it and the think started screaming and wouldn't cut for chit. I shut it down immediately, turns out the filter fell off the hose. Replaced the line and filter cleaned the carb and went back to cuting.
