My grandfathers river bottom is over run with thorny locust trees. They spread very quickly.

Is it in the drip line of any trees that are of high value or in other ways important to you?
If not residual herbicides are best for locust.
There is also a specialty product that is very active in locust but I would have to check the label; I can't remember if it is honey or black locust. It works on 1 and not the other and would be much safer on trees around your target.

Yup. I cut the whole tree up with an Stihl 026 running an 18" bar .325 .063 Stihl full chisel. Very soft wood.

I was googling Aspen, and it looks a little different. Thats why I figured I would look for some leaves to help in identifying it. According to the description, this tree was way to tall for Aspen.
