Trunk part seems to be a metal injection molded part. I didn't see any machining work that had to be done to it for what it is for.

I was more referring to the coolant housings and the like. I don't think a full plastic latch would be a great idea.

2003 TDI ALH so several of the parts from an auto won't work on it for the cooling system. Got a small leak where the plastic hose block meets the head and already have the o-rings to fix it as well. Replacing coolant glow plugs while I'm at that point also. I haven't had to do much since I have owned it except regular stuff and timing belt replacement. Over 240,000 so far and this is the first clutch for it.
The TDIs really are a good design apart from the cooling system piping, radiator, and electric fans. Although the frequency for the timing belt service can be frustrating on some.
Plastic is cheaper to produce while also being much easier to do complex molds.
It's lighter as well and I think they were obsessed at the time with lowering the weight on passenger cars to skirt under some Euro emissions laws. I get all that but it put their reputation in the crapper for reliability. Some of the plastic coolant fittings are only good for about 60k. Some only last about 40k. Luckily the heat exchange piping and block is still alloy - that whole mess is a pain to replace.

The worst job on those that I ever had was replacing the heat control servos on a 2009 Golf. You need to be a contortionist (with tiny hands) to get in there.

He pulled a tendon in training in Kentucky...
He came back here & it about killed me to see him in a small stall for 6 weeks!
He got LOTSO PEPPERMINT TREATS if I was there. Lol

He's a big boy!

Gratuitous tranny picts for @dall. Actually not too bad for over 240k on it. You can see that the flywheel bolts are not lining up anymore because the dual mass flywheel is starting to fail. I've had a single mass flywheel, clutch pressure plate sitting here for years waiting for this day. Had to order some hardware and other parts while I'm into this thing. Should be able to put it back together in a week.
