Anyone ever dye their plastics? Is there a special recipe that works and gives it a nice shine?

Thanks

never done it to chainsaw parts, but when I was into Nitro RC stuff years ago I dyed a bunch of parts with Rit dye. As Duce said make sure parts are clean, a dawn dish soap & hot water bath before dying them.

Only way to get a nice shine is new oem plastic. If they shine when they’re orange, they’ll shine when they’re black. New AM plastic will be a bit more dull, but not much. Old dull plastic will be flat black when you’re done.
It doesn’t take much dye, maybe 1/4 cup liquid Rit dye to 2-3 gallons of water. Simmer them right at the point of boiling or slightly under. A rolling boil can burn whatever is touching the bottom.
I let them simmer for a couple hours so it goes mostly all the way through the plastic so future scratches won’t show

Gonna have to give this a try sometime on my 361 clone saw…not a fan of the AM orange color.

This is the recipe I use. It works well. However, I’ve now decided I’ll just use graphite for the orange plastics. It’s a nicer colour in the end up. Just more metallic black. I’ve also tried frost grey and it came out black too. The graphite looks good on white parts but orange parts goes darker.

Graphite on the left and frost grey on the right. Just two shades of black lol

That’s the graphite on a white plastic part.

That’s off a 572 I just need to rebuild. It’ll look pretty slick. I like the 5 series because of the grey crank case.

I found that cleaning the plastics, after dying them, with with some dish soap then a wipe with acetone on a cloth brings the shine back up a bit and cleans of all the crap from the dye bath. But you can’t avoid the dull bits and scratches.

Seems extensive on the recipe. I just used a couple ounces of dye and boiling water:nusenuse::sherlock:

Should probably try some garlic and paprika for better shine lol

Lol. I also added soy sauce for extra flavour.

I think it’s what rit dye advise for some synthetic fabrics.
