A few needed wacks on the ass to start and given some work to do instead of sitting inside playing computer games or texting on the smart phone .

cant do that anymore or they call it child abuse . mom use to have a board she used on us until it broke on my butt and i laughed at her . i dont have kids and i am glad about that i see alot of kids that back talk to their parents and parents who baby their kids and not give the kids any chores and making it where they feel like they are entitled to do what ever they want and when they get out on their own they still expect mommy and daddy to take care of them
case and point my cousins son they babied and no chores is married now and a kid of his own he just blew the motor in his truck they asked me to come listen to the motor and i said its done and if he wouldnt be mudding with the truck it would still be running. he said i dont mud with it i just take it on the hill, i showed him the inch of mud all the way down the truck and his dad said its ok its lasted this long .so i say alot of the blame is in the parents not giving the kids the chores and responsibility ,giving them anything the kid wants

You need to move down under.

Here we associate respect with mateship
A mate is your friend but its more than that. Its something only Aussies understand.
In Australia you dont always need to know anyone's name..... it doesn't matter cause we just say, hi mate, hey mate, how ya going mate.
We (most of us) take pride in having mateship as a core value.
For me, respect is something that is earnt. Its never given nor granted.

My children have been raised to show respect, and taught how to earn it.
We have taught them that when you do something stupid that erodes respect, you then have to work to earn it back.

I see the kids that are not taught these values and know that my kids will come through on top in the end.

Sorry for the off topic rant but I believe its a very important topic in today's world.

Off topic? Not at all.

They call that enabling your child. I know 2 kids that are severely enabled.
One is 22 and the other is 34 years old. The 34 year old doesn't even work.
While dad is running a concrete company son is out playing with his old trucks
that momma bought. Kid gets a hefty pay check every week. What ever he
whats or needs momma buys him.The kid has become a complete punk and
needs the living crap beat out of him.

When we had our first kid, my mother said to me....... remember this.
If you ever threaten to do something as punishment, follow through with it.

One day my kids had the lounge room covered in toys that I had asked them to pick up.
I came in and told them that if they didnt put them away they would all go in the bin

I got a reply of "yeah yeah"

I saw RED!

The bin came out and I started filling it.
the kids screamed NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO and scrambled for their favorites first.
I got most of the toys.
I made them watch me put them in the main bin and then made them watch it all go in the garbage truck

Never again were the words Yeah Yeah muttered and never again was a mess left anywhere :)

I did the exact same thing.

It comes down to respect and responsibility!

Teaching my kids both long before they turn (eighteen) is number one in my book. Its unreal how many people tell there kids that they aren't adults in tell they turn eighteen years old.... I think that's sad. I understand we have to have a set ages as a country for things to function, like 16 to drive or 18 to vote Ect. That doesn't mean you can't be a adult long before. I never seen a good outcome from a kid that's been babied.

A trip past the local high school parking lot tells the whole story. Back in my early days there were a few old junkers that a few of us bought for cheep, the rest did without. Today, the whole gigantic expanded parking lot is filled with brand new vehicles.

Nothing is appreciated if it wasn't earned. If nothing is earned it screws the whole system up.

We aren't raising kids. The end result is supposed to be an adult.
Well just because you think they are adult dont mean they dont think and act like a kid.

My 2 sons were always given chores to do and were expected to do it . I taught them how to cook , clean look after themselves , got them some jobs on farms when they were younger , always taught them to respect others .
They always worked for what they got and learned the value of money and what earning it was was about .

Both have done very well and are on their own with their own homes and families . Both trained as firefighters but decided to go military instead , one a medic the other a Capt. in armored , both very well respected by their peers or anyone that meets them .

Am I bragging a bit ??,,,damn right ! :D

Despite all the computers and electronics.
It's got to have ;air, fuel and an ignition source. Electricals need a good ground. Suck,squeeze,bang,blow(4 stroke).
That's kind of like engine porn. I thought this was a family site?

I work in a school system, primarily around high school kids. It really worries me for the future of our country. Very few of them have any technical ability or desire to learn any. Few can even read a ruler. Hardly any take vo-tech classes. What happens when us middle age, trades guys that aren't afraid to get our hands and clothes dirty aren't around?

I have twin girls that have just started high school.
They are probably the only kids in school without a mobile phone funded by mummy and daddy.
I told them they can have a phone when they can afford to support the phone and that one day they will thank me for the life skills they learn without one.

They agree and never once complain.

I read that this generation will be the first in centuries to not be able to read or follow a map.
Just cluck "get directions" and technology does it for you.

My kids will be able to read a map!
