Dave and I have been trying to retrieve as many dead oaks as possible from my property. Over the last 5 years or so, many (~3 dozen) mature (20-28" dbh) chestnut oaks and a rare white oak have died on my humble 16 acres. We have been trying to get as many onto the ground for firewood and lumber as possible. Last Spring we dropped about 3-4 cord of firewood and 1500 bd-ft of dead chestnut oaks. So far this year, we have only dropped 2 trees, but they were dominant trees, yielding ~550 and ~1000 bd-ft respectively of lumber logs and several cords of firewood. FWIW, I could totally use any help harvesting these dead standing timbers. If you are in S. Central PA feel free to PM me, I can use all the help I can get. Here's a little taste of what we have dropped so far this year.
