I am ABSOLUTELY not going to say you are wrong but to me I found it was more able to be lugged down. But for the record I have NEVER ran a ported 660. Ran a bunch of 660's and a couple 066's but its always been in 20" Hard maple. From my point I do understand the undersquare/oversquare but an M-tronic would be able to adjust into a lugging situation. Like I said, I'm not saying your wrong just what I've found. This is also coming from a fool that runs a 20" bar on a 90cc saw so... I do use my dogs. I wish I had a stock one to run on the landing just to compare but unfortunately I do not. So maybe I don't have my memory correct as far as the stock form.
I'm talking stock saw's the stock Aussie 660 is a different saw altogether to the epa choked up 660 that was sold in the US even had different jetting. 20/25'' bars on 90cc saw's with .404 used to be common here well with the Ironbark cutters and the like.

incidental info but the tree service I do some work for hates their 661. (2016 model.) they are an odd bunch as they have a 25" set up on it and had a similar setup on my 372 that they love...( and hammered the chit out of it as well)
661 just sits in the truck...."too heavy...too slow"

" ....that red one wow!! like that one....she good saw...."

they will never get to run my modded 372 or the "hacked up" 385....apes don't get to run them.
( they are not even allowed to look at my Mofo 440)

this crew can break rocks....and often do...with nothing more then a chainsaw...

think I am on my 13th 661. Ran em stock, modded, and fully ported. At the time the 661 came out I had 5 660s and an 066. After running them side by side for a bit I started selling off my 660s and replacing with 661s.

- vibes are way way less on the 661.
- economy is way better on 661
- 661 is always on tune.
- stock 661 torque is without question much much stronger than a stock 660 or muff modded 660.

I run good bar oil, good gas and 2T oil at 32-40:1, clean my air filter, and the saw has treated me well. No issues on any of the 13.

These days 99% of the time my ported 661 wears a 36" or 41" bar running full comp .404 RS. No issues. The other ported 661 wears a 28" lite running 9pin full comp 3/8ths RS and it HAULS! Again no issues.

Possible issues -

1. the 661 likes to warm up a little before you cut.
2. shutting the saw off immediately after a good long cut and then trying to restart it.
3. running the old 4700 coils. They allow the saw to go too lean.
4. running the old intake boot.
5. opening up the muffler too much on a stock saw.

6. running a 7pin sprocket on anything under 32" bar. Stock 661 has the torque to pull 8pin right out of the box. A 7pin 661 = slow. None of my stock or muff modded 660s could ever pull an 8pin faster then 7pin even on a short 20" bar.

7. always "resetting" the saw. Saw learns/tunes pretty fast. A "reset" should be tried when it's really not working right.

New model of anything comes out...usually has a few bugs. 4700 coil and old intake boot were the bugs. Stihl fixed and warrantied them both.

Ive ran both a ported 660 and stock 661 with MM and with 32" bar buried. I gotta say I was impressed with the stock 661. I also ran a MMWS 661c that was awesome. If I bought a new 90cc class it would be a 661c I believe

So moral of the story I guess would be that 661's are like Moobs... they are sensitive. If you are going to dump rat piss with Olive oil at a 20:1 ratio, then a 661 is probably not for you. If you have zero patience for the chance of a lemon, then probably I would not buy a 661. Sounds like they are one extreme of the other. Like stated Mine has been faithful and makes my peppy hard... sounds like for some they want to hit it with a mack truck... hard.

My experience with electronics, both Husky or Stihl , is u get a lemon or u get a dang good one. Ive had lemons with both brands. Wonder when Makita/Dolmar will join the game?

So I am fortunate enough to have a nice albeit stock 660 and a stock 661. My 661 just got here and I'm having some bar stud issues, so I put the 660 cover on it and ran it today.
I will say I use them for noodleing and just because I can but mainly for noodleing my firewood I buck at 24". I run a 28" bar with semi-chisel 33rm.
With the 660 I ran the 8pin for a few cuts and then went back to the 7, much better results with the 7 and it's stayed. With the 661 I noodled 2 and went directly to the 8 pin and it's staying, that simple.

I will be cutting most of the day Thursday and I'll see if I can do more direct comparisons while bucking some wood. Thus far the 661 is impressive, my issue is the 660 is staying a bit because I do have honest concerns in reliability and longevity when it comes to the 661.

All from reading the interweb of course
