Dealer quoted me $185 on a 460 coil. Ouch. And he's a good dealer too. Bought my 461 from him for around 950 out the door. Can't find a used one anywhere. Is there any aftermarket 460 coils worth putting in my saw.? Thank you.

Hop on ebay, there’s usually good used oem coils on there for reasonable prices.

I will disagree with the above post (2 above). I have used the AM coils in numerous 044/440s, 046/460, 461 etc w/o any problems. For the price (on eBay for about $15 shipped) you can't beat them.

Space it from the flywheel .010-.020 (use a piece of flashing or a business card). The 2 bolt ones work fine in place of 3 bolt ones.

You will usually need to shorten the plug wire about 1.5". It is simple, unscrew it from the coil and cut it and re screw it in.

I wish the AM carbs were as trouble free as the AM coils! If you need it fast, look for shipping from within the US, will cost a few bucks more but can save weeks of time. Always look for free shipping, they are usually the best deals.

Good Luck with it.

Also, FYI (since you are new here) some minor muffler mods in addition to pulling the limiters on the carbs will make the 460 and 461 run stronger, cooler and longer. (Heat kills motors).

Let me know if you want more details.

I have seen three models of aftermarket coils have a problem out of THOUSANDS sold.
The MS361 is literally hit or miss as to whether or not it will work when new.
The 395xp is just as flakey as the OEM coil for that version, they usually last 12-18 months before dying out.
We had one 272 coil that was DOA.
Beyond that I cant recall any bad coils for any models, the coils are made in facilities that make only coils as their sole business right alongside OEM coils for all sorts of applications.

I did the muffler and yeah it definitely runs cooler. I'm gonna pull the limiter caps once I figure this coil out.

Don't run it with muffler mods w/o removing the limiters, it will run too lean.

With most 460 + 461s, with just two 1/4" holes in the upper right of the muffler cover the tune ends up at 3/4 - 1 turn out on the low, and 1 - 1+1/8 on the Hi.

Do you stock a 460 coil that would meet the gents needs?

As far as I recall the coil from the 044 ms440' 046' ms460 and later model 066' ms660 will interchange. Stens, farmertec, are the only aftermarket coils that I've had good luck with so far or spend the big bucks for OEM.

Run any Stihl coil from the mid era saws, 026-046 will all fit.

The 046/460 coil has the distinction of having slow speed retard built in, while the other models didn’t. They call the others “dummy coils” I’ve been told.

The 10mm 044 came with the same blue Ducati coil from the factory as the MS260.

If you are running stock compression, stock ignition timing and you have a decomp valve, I’d have zero issue running an 026/036/044 coil which you can find on eBay for cheap. Will run fine, could bite you on startup.

@XP_Slinger , how did the MS260 coil run in your 461?

If it was me, I wouldn’t be putting an aftermarket coil on a brand new saw. But I’m just not a fan of the AM stuff.

I thought I read the poly flywheel saws coil had a start retard and also compensated for flywheel warpage, could be wrong though.
