If you want to avoid machining the bar slot you could just weld up some 1/2" sq with 1/2" x 1/4" (or whatever) laid on edge .

Or drill a hole near one end of the plate and band saw the slot to it from the other end, then weld the open end to the rotating stub/axel.

Then to complicate things, you need to add a third axis so you can also swing/angle the saw up/down, lol...

I think those are the same type Mike uses on his sharpening vise and if so they are great.
