If TM values his relationship/friendship with a Stihl engineer last place he'd bring him is a saw forum. I thought by looking at the flange(bridge/horse saddle) it had something to do with directing fuel & oil to a certain area. Its shape and location kinda show its purpose. Oh come on TM we'll let the stihl guy through the door so we can all ask him many sensible questions about everything, and we'll all ask at once.

I wonder if it acts like a crank scraper and windage tray.

it is in there to help cool the cylinder wall
Sure as hell looks like it scrapes the rod and crank by design, pushing cool charge against the cylinder walls and forward, which happens to be where the lowers are located.

Does the 661 share this part as well? Transfer design quite similar.

Lower temps??? Interesting.
Different engine though...
By diluting the fuel / air mix with inert gases (products of combustion), peak burn temps cannot be reached and certain noxious gases are not produced, all at the expense of horsepower.

Aka Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valves.

Except in the motors we deal with, there will always be charge dilution.

Yep. That’s what this derail started as, a comparison between a stuffed up two stroke muffler and an EGR valve.
My truck has the beer can blank-off.
Happy new year!

I know a Stihl engineer but he was working on the 1143 series and some new chit he wont talk about at the moment.

I called it a bridge.
The word by word translation from the german documentation is flange and in some domcument flush bridge.

/Edit:
I did some research:
I found the patent for this thing.
Its there for lubricating the the bearing and colling the piston.
So 1:1 for everyone.

Very interesting that some view the importance as the bottom acting as a crank scraper and redirecting the flow generated by the crank lobes to an uncooled portion of the cylinder, while others see the top portion redirecting the incoming fuel to lubricate the piston bearing and cool the inside/exhaust wall of the piston.

Very possibly a clever design that accomplishes both functions.

Also, with the increased case volume to accommodate the new style cylinder, it's function being similar to a crank stuffer also makes sense.

Can you post a link for this?

So in doc #2 is the first patent for this part.
It only speaks about cooling of the piston and the piston pin.
No word about bearings.
Just cool air for the piston.
Document 2 pic 19 at the end is what a stihl case stuffer would look.

Next big thing will be one crankcase with 2 style transfers.
Makes it possible to switch between pro and farmer saw just with different cylinders.
Husky does this already, just look at the cylinders on the 357 and 359. Yes slightly larger bore on the 359 but completely different transfers as well. And a crank stuffer in the 357 to boot.

One crankcase which will feed transfers on the side like the old 2-stroke engines and one transfer feed in in the front which will feed tranfers like on the MS 462

I can't read German, but I think this settles the debate!

Thanks for the info.

In summary, the dohicky is there to cool the piston!!! We can now speak freely about it!

Awesome! Definitive info!!
It would be great if someone knew how to translate a pdf into English. I’ve been trying but no dice so far.

I think we need a complete Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis to confirm fluid flow and thermal cheristics just to be certain.
