Been thinking about milling since I got my bar yesterday and a question came to mind. What size rim do y’all prefer with a 36” bar? 7 or 8? My 394 has an 8 pin on it now and I’m wondering if gearing down for torque will be beneficial to the saw in the milling environment.

Sure it would help to gear it down milling is rough on everything.

Running the shortest bar possible helps too. I don't bother swapping rims but the extra torque sure wouldn't be a bad thing. I'm just lazy that way.

I hear ya on not going overboard with the bar length. The 36” will be used for a couple big ash, after that it may just be a wall hanger for a while. Need to get my 28” for more options and it will also be my everyday use bar on the 394.

I used an 8 for this maple and apple. When I stepped up to bigger wood, I went with the 7. With either rim, the saw seemed to be happy around 9k on the tach. That was a 37" (I think it was a 119dl chain) bar.

Is she free this weekend? A bar like that makes the wife very very desirable. Dinner drinks...:)
Think about it. If she WAS free, would YOU let her get away?? Lol

Beat me too it brother! Lol! Even if she was “free” you’d be dealing with 240lbs of well armed resistance. Lol! I’m a pretty lucky guy for sure, and I know it;)
