We are looking for a small rear handle saw to trim limbs from a man basket on a front end loader around our fields and field roads. I can get a Stihl 241 for $435 contract price. That is with a 16" bar and chain. Is there another saw I should be looking at?

He keeps trying to sell me a 250 or two for that price, but I've never had good luck out of them. I literally beat one against a tree one time because it wouldn't start. That was before I knew about the "Max three pulls on choke" rule.

If I get one, I may have tbe have it repaired by @Mastermind 's dealer, lol! After seeing his video of a ported 241 as well as Brad's and a few others, it makes me want to get one.

The other option would be some sort of Echo in that range or a small pro Husky.

Thanks in advance.

Here's a recent thread on small saws.... once you get past the 1st few pages of typically known facts & figures that have been discussed 100's of times on chainsaw sites,

It's a good thread to read..... it's hard to keep track of it thou, it gets moved a lot.

I've read most of that post until it got out of hand. I took a lot of that in consideration and is why I am looking at the 241. We aren't worried about the weight as much as that poster.

I have a 261 and have thought about getting one of those for work. I didn't have a tank through mine before I sent it to Mastermind along with a 362 so I am not sure that is what we are looking for.

I am about the only one with my agency that pushes pro saws. I know one WMA that has a pile of 250s that are burnt up. I guess if you aren't going to take care of them, you might as well buy cheap saws.

The 550 isn’t as good as a Stihl.

Don't be afraid of a 550xp. They run like a scalded dog when they are ported and run quite well with just a muffler mod
A buddy has one and I ran it a week or so ago. They run pretty good, but would t that be comparing apples to oranges?

The 241 seems like a no brainer at that price. Mtronic seems like the way to go for a company saw that is going to be abused by multiple people.

On a side note I've got an ms251 with a small muffler mod. that surprises me every time I run it.

Just my 2 cents

I am a big fan of small saws. I have not got to run a 241 yet but I always enjoyed my 024. Just some other small saws I would like are the 201 rear handle, echo 361p, Makita 3601 and Dolmar 421. I currently own the 421 and 3601. I have also seen Husqvarna 435 take some serious work as ground saws for some local tree services. But at that price you better grab the 241. Or see how cheap they will get you a 201 rear handle.

I have a 550 and 2 241s. I've had a 346 and various others as we use <50cc saws for the bulk of our work. Mostly killing olives, felling small pine and de limbing larger pine to drill and fill them (large customer thinks big pine should be dead standing).

It's hard to go past the 241 as a limbing saw, especially with 3/8lp and a stihl light bar. It's light, has "enough" guts stock, its quiet and it runs forever on a tank of fuel. One runs 325x7, one runs 3/8lpx6 and both setups are fine. The 3/8lp setup stays sharp waaaaay longer than it has any right to.

The 550 is noticeably stronger, easy to modify for a fair heap more grunt and can run a lot more chain. 325x8 or 3/8x7 in Aussie hardwood is no worries.

The 550 feels way faster, but at the end of the day the same amount of wood is on the ground no matter who is using which saw. The 241 is just so damn friendly and easy to get along with (boring even) I've never felt a need to modify it and it's the only stock saws I own.

That's a better price than I can get Dustin. A heck of a deal.....
That's part of the state contract crap. I like it when it helps save $$$, but it doesn't allow the use of local dealers to purchase. I have to get it out of Clarksville and they drop ship them from the warehouse. I have a hard time getting local dealers to tune a tunable saw/blower/pole saw when I didn't buy it from them. In this case, it won't matter. I just need to find a way to have you work your mojo on it.
