I just bought a barn fresh John Deere 60V for a heck of a deal that seller claims needs a carb kit and starter rope. Very neat looking saw. I will probably just clean, repair and sell. Going to pick it up this weekend in the next town over. Going to post seller picks in a bit.

I will post about it here as I get into it, but I thought maybe we could talk about this saw, if anyone has any tips or tricks.

I finally made some time today to get started on this one. I spent a couple of hours cleaning and disassembling. It has spark, decent compression, and all the fastners came loose even the rusted muffler Phillips heads! The cylinder and piston are in good shape as well. I had a good time, nothing has fought me yet on this one. I do need to locate a pair of starting pawls or if easier just a flywheel with the pawls.

@Duane(Pa) - nice so same chassis? As in all those versions would use same parts besides cylinder & piston? That sure would help me find those starter pawls easier.

I think everything you said is correct. I am not an expert though. I had a JD 70 and regretted selling it. Found this Echo 750 to take it’s place

Btw, I read on here that gasoline or kerosene works well to clean built up junk on old saws. That's exactly what I did, except I did half and half gas&diesel. I figured the gas fumes wouldn't be as bad if I cut it with some diesel. Just an FYI for anyone messing with super dirty old saws.

I had a bad result with "Super Clean" water based de greaser. Faded and etched some plastic and paint on a different saw. Probably my fault for leaving it on too long or something but I didn't want to make that mistake again.

@Duane(Pa) - thanks! Il look into it a bit further and see. Too bad there's no IPLs easily available (that I know of) to compare like on the 200 series huskys. That sure made things easier on me with my 61 build.

Yep. It’s caustic. Isopropyl is fairly inert. Mineral spirits is good too.

@Duane(Pa) - yes I agree on the alc and mineral spirits. Mineral spirits is probably a bit better than kero or diesel on grease too. I did test a spot with alc thankfully, whatever paint they used on that 1983 husky 61 stripped super easy with 71% isopropy.

Wow! Glad you mentioned that. I didn’t know it would act that way. I wonder if it is lacquer? Off to google land. lol

@Duane(Pa) - I know right, it's usually perfectly fine. I normally wouldn't have even tested it before using, but I was being cautious from the super clean incident.

Could be a one stage paint kind of issue like the old cars without a clear coat?

I was wondering if anyone could help me confirm if the John Deere 50v and the 60v use the same flywheel or starter pawls???

Or the Echo version answer would work as well. Echo CS-452vl use same flywheel or starter pawls as cs-602vl?

Thank you!

Ok good news! These models all use the same starting pawls. Echo part # 17721802830

John Deere 80v (Echo CS750) John Deere 70v (Echo CS702), John Deere 60v (Echo CS602), John Deere 50v (Echo CS451 and CS452).

In fact, if you google search that Echo part number, many of the parts dealers show that 21 echo models that these pawls fit.

The saw has spark, carb has been rebuilt, and I further tore the saw down for a super deep clean.

I just found a cs-452 flywheel for 17 bucks shipped. I am getting that one since it comes with the springs and hardware I might need as well.

Ok the saw is officially a runner!! I think I can save the original bar and chain.

This thing sounds like it has a super charger or something. Not sure if it's supposed to sound like that. Ha.
