An arborist friend gave me a pile of saws for fixing his 084, 066, and 034s. One of those saws is a decent 036 pro that leaked oil. I fixed the oil leak and got it running this winter and set it aside because of other projects at the time. I went out tonight to tear it down and give it a proper cleaning and thought while I'm in there, I'd spice it up a bit.

I already have an 034 super that has been smoothed out, but it's just got a gasket delete. Im happy with my gains, but I'd like to take the 036 a bit further. I've taken .030" off the base, and set the squish to .020". I can go more if needed.

Will fingers work well in this saw? Or clip the lowers and widen and raise the uppers? Widen exhaust and intake? What say ye? Fire away

Kevin,

My first and last 036 jug shots are in this thread. The first on page 1, last on page 2.

http://opeforum.com/threads/my-drf255-ported-036-conversion.141/

The last one, with the square intake, runs much better than the first.

I went 103/120 with bridge ports. I believe the intake lands at 84, but I squared the corners to 80.

All the info is in the thread, more than I can remember right now.

They are @Mastermind numbers, not mine. The saws run remarkably well with his numbers.

Got back on this saw today. I completely tore it down to clean it. Not sure, but I think this saw lived it's life on Stihl orange bottle oil. Exhaust port isn't clean, but it isn't bad either.

I began by marking the new port edges. I had a fine point marker in the garage, but me thinks the boys needed it for something. The intake has a valley in the center of the floor.

Not sure what the transfer on the intake side is all about. Maybe it was run with a loose air filter, or maybe none at all. The scuffing looks worse in the pics than what it is. I spent 10 seconds on the piston with 400 grit and smoothed the lines out.

Added bridge ports between the transfers

After porting was done, I finished assembling the saw

Washer and worm bushing installed

I port matched the heat shield, gasket, and muffler, and added one of red97's small deflectors. I'll get muffler mod pics and an action vid hopefully tomorrow

I don't get your intake port.

I take .034 off the base and wind up with the lower lip of the intake at 82-84*. Seems like your entire floor sits at 80 without epoxy.

I like the pointy entry or the intake. I think it adds throttle response without affecting overall flow at higher rpm. They had to design it that way for a reason.

Not sure. I got 80° repeatedly, before the porting and after, hence the roughness in the intake floor from me trying not to go deeper.
As far as the valley, I'd think if it was valuable, I'd figure we'd see it on more saws? But honestly, I remembered 80 and 84 from your link above, but figured you took more off the base

IIRC I heard/read somewhere that the purpose of the pointy intake floor was to reduce intake noise...

Did you check your bearings? PTO side could be on the way out and allowing the piston to start slapping a bit.

Both bearings were smooth and tight.
Did you ever get this saw finished? Just curious how it turned out and if the bridge ports made a big difference. I'm gonna do my 361 next. I have a am cylinder I was thinking of putting bridge ports in that way I don't have to mess up my oem cylinder. [emoji4] [emoji4]

It runs well. I just haven't had time to compare it to the 034s yet. I honestly don't think they do much for a sub 70cc saw. If the transfers are right, fingers or bridges might not do much for any saw.

I'd cut 30 or 40 thou from the base and squish and port to the #'s in this thread. Smooth casting flaws and widen the intake and exhaust. She'll run

Well, that took awhile. Construction work kicked off a bit early. Everybody wanted concrete poured as soon as the snow melted.
Got some run time on this saw today. Starts easy, idles all day. Chain is 84 dl of untouched LGX with a few test cuts on it. Not a fan

Mounted a different bar/chain. This is a 20" square filed chain. Little bit grabby, but it'll be OK after it's filed again

Saw looks great Kevin.

I'm still not sure on bridge ports. The 036's I've done with them runs very well, but so does the MS360 without them.

I learned at the CT GTG that a properly ported 036 makes more power than a stock 046. It's the model of saw I'd choose if I could only use one.

No one puts bridges on a quad port. It would be a mistake.

Practice on you AM jug but use your OEM jug.

Take a look at the transfer tunnels and uppers on the AM vs. OEM jug and study. Look at the entry angles and the cast in bulges for directing flow. You may have a really good AM jug, but there will usually be a difference.

I'm not sure on them either Al. I think they make the transfers lose too much velocity. I think my 034S would put the smack down on this saw. I'll eventually fill them back in and try that
