If you decide to replace that fuel line, the Stihl R5 rated line works great and is a nice fit with the grommet tanks. Costs a lot less than the suggested OEM as well..., if you have access to it through an honest Stihl dealer, of course. Mattyo even did a video on it a while back. Same goes for the grommets for the grommet tanks. Last one I bought for a 55 tank was like 5 bux. You can get a bag of Stihl grommets that will work for not much more.

I’ve already got a new fuel line, filter and grommet, but thank you for the heads up I will remember that.

No I don’t have a USC, it was all done by hand at the Parts washer, then blown off with compressed air and then wiped down with a shop towel. I tell ya what, the way my back is aching after being slouched over the Parts washer, a USC is getting more intising. Lol!!

Jon and I are going to be splitting his IH 300 utility for a clutch change in a couple weeks...we’ve been in tractor mode:D. I was just talking to him about his 55 and I would expect that he gets it back together within the coming week. I may put it together for him this afternoon.

Between work and other things, it has slowed down. Had to wait for the new crank bearings, case gasket and cranks seals to come in again. I’m hoping to get back to it Sunday and get the bottom end back together and start porting in Sunday. I had intentions to work on it last weekend but got side tracked in the barn......... but any time spent in the barn is good Time right??? Oh look......... a squirrel. Lol!

Got another set of bearings installed and it’s smooth as silk. Got the new seals in, fuel line, fuel filter, and new tank idolaters installed. Installed the new clutch but had to swap out the clutch dogs onto my old hub because the hyway didn’t want to thread on, acted like wrong thread count, 1/2 a turn and locked up. Thinking I’ll be stopping by again tomorrow to work on her more and get to porting!!!

I also did find that the clutch is pretty marred up and will be replaced along with the clutch Bell. (I can’t remember what Josh said it’s actually called........)

And so many of them do sound like "bells" ... I'm calling 'em bells from now on. No more drums. Bell Bell Bell Bell Bell...... LOL

@skidder just got caught up on this thread -- looks awesome. Can't wait to see the saw done and rippin.
If you are interested here is a build thread on a 51 I converted to 55 at Dan's place for a buddy of mine who is the saw owner.
One thing we did you might want to consider is installing heli coils in the intake plastic and switching from self threading screws to M4 or M5 (can't remember which but my video has the details) so you can tighten the carb all you want with no worry of stripping the plastic with those large metal self-tapping screws into just plastic.

Enjoy the build! On the edge of my seat to see how she turns out.

Here is the build thread on that saw -- maybe you've seen it already:

Good luck!

That 51 is in really nice shape!! How’d she run once you got it back together and converted to 55??

It's open port -- OEM cylinder piston.

It runs fantastic. My buddy loves the saw -- we have it setup w/ 18" x 0.325 chain (0.058 oregon powermatch bar). I got rid of the baffles and screen in the muffler to open it up nice. It's easy to mod and grind that out if you separate the muffler halfs.

If you check out the thread there are some vids of Dan and Mason running it the day we got the rebuild done.
These like to run a bit rich -- 12500 to 13K at the most. You are changing things up even more w/ port work and timing so who knows where yours will settle in best!

Good luck with it -- these saws are great and don't seem to get the same love that the 346 family does. They are essentially the same as a "pro" saw today.

This being my first “build” I’m excited. It was a good running saw when I started and kinda went “why did I tear this down again??” But as it’s comig back together I have a deeper appreciation for the overall condition of the saw and wanna make her scream. I know it ain’t gunna have anything on my 550 but I’ll be interesting to say the least to see what she’ll do. I just gotta stop getting side tracked with other projects. Lol!! My brother and I split my 300 utility to replace the clutch Sunday. Once we get that back together the cylinder head is coming off and probly getting overhauled and painted by the time it’s all said and done. Lol!

Well I think I'll be in the barn tomorrow for awhile to. Need to fiddle with our contraption a little more and would like to get that 288 crank swapped out.
