I'm getting ready to rebuild an 029 with an 039 top end. Owner put an AM carb on it (as well as AM fuel line, fuel filter and air filter) in an attempt to get it to run but P&C is toast. I've never rebuilt a carb but would you go with the AM carb or just rebuild the stock carb? Thanks

OEM carburetor for sure. not hard to rebuild unless you have no mechanical ability, if that is the case sell the saw lol

Depends on your luck with the aftermarket carbs. They are cheaper than a carb kit many times, so order a couple. My Stihl equipment runs better with the cheap AM carbs than OEM. Some come fully adjustable while the OEM are not.

I agree. Rebuild the top end as needed and leave the carb alone unless you have trouble with it. An old adage -- one thing at a time.

I have it on good authority that these are good cheap kits. I got a few on the way.

And have no fear the hardest part of rebuilding a carb is remembering to count how many turns your high and low speed screws were set at and not getting carb cleaner in the face lol.

From day one I haven't used carb cleaner on any 2C carburetors, only soap and water. And I have been cleaning them for 10 yrs now.

And I thinking you are referring the mixture screw(s) as for counting turns. I normally just set at 1-1/2 turns and tune from there as I never know who been turning them before me especially when the limiter caps are gone.

i usually use wd40 to check passages, in the past I have had certain carb cleaners damage the check valves and not allow them to pass fuel after wards. Also careful with compressed air as you can damage the check valves to. I have always had good luck with carbtech21.com rebuild kits

The carb kit costs about as much as an am carburetor so I've been using the ams with pretty good luck so far. I would probably use an oem fuel line on an 029 however..

Here's what on it vs the OEM carb. What is the passage on top of the AM carb?

Yes I was referring to mixing screws.
So do you use Dawn then?

Yes at one time and still occasionally but mainly I use a 9.5 pH (Alconox) non residual soap now. The Dawn I use now occasionally is Dawn Platinum.

that thing on top connects to the air filter. if you're filter doesn't have a connection, you got the wrong carb. rebuild the OEM.
Also, i find one of the hardest parts of carb builds is not losing the metering spring; very small and looking for a chance to escape. got several in different dark places in the shop
