IMG_3671.JPG Is there a better option to the factory paper element and pre filter? I know some people run it without the pre filter while others have said there was little difference and use both. But is there something out there that with a little modification would be less restrictive than the paper element alone?

Has anyone adapted a k&n, green meanie, etc to work in its place? I can see the flange that clips to be a problem, but I'm sure that could be glued/bonded to another filter.

I saw in test cuts with my saw that Mike did, cutting with the HD airfilter and without the air filter, that there is a big difference in performance.

Anyone play with this already?

I'm wonder it you could adapt a uni foam element to one.

Really like the HD filters on the Dolmar as it is.. does not seem go get go many fines in

Sent from my non internal combustion device.

I'm sure it filters well. However The tinkerer in me wants to get this HD set up to work better.

I know I'll be fighting the tight turn of the HD intake too.

It filters great but the difference was huge in power output. About 10%. I haven't noticed that problem with the low top. 800 rpm drop from the filter being put back on.

I don't know the whole story with the saw in the videos above. But the 7910 does not work well with the HD filter kit. With or without the filter the saw is down about 2000 rpm. The only time I've seen a 7910 come up to rpm with this filter kit is in the winter.

Ported and timing advance. Dropped from off the limiter to around 12.3k. It is a 7910 cylinder on the 6421.

I've never heard this before. I'm glad my saw doesn't seem to follow what you have seen.

Reading about these HD AF's "stealing" performance is one of the reasons I never actively pursued buying them for my saws.

I cut 99% fresh wood, meaning no or very little fine dust.
As such I like to think that the OEM felt filter is about as good as it gets for my purposes.

I've decided not to modify the HD filter and sold it. I put my order in for an oem standard mesh filter with Nate. I think that I will make my own 150 micron stainless steel mesh filter like did for my 026pro using the fleece filter for a skeleton after I test both. I'll see if I can grind a little plastic and make more mesh area.
It might not win any beauty contests but it should flow well I'm not overly concerned with fines IMG_3114.JPG

from what i can tell its not the filter element that is the problem.....the elbow is what seems to restrict the flow from my limited playing around with them. the issue with the pre filter isnt a restriction of flow but rather the fines get past the pre filter(around the top and bottom of it) and get trapped between it and the paper filter plugging it up pretty quickly.

I know it's an old thread, but I got a like in here so I'm using the opportunity to revive it and ad info.

Dolmar/Makita 64xx/73xx/79xx OEM air filter options, Dolmar part numbers:
- 038 173 101 - felt filter
- 038 173 011 - nylon mesh filter (coarse)
- 038 173 080 - nylon mesh filter 0.050mm (fine)
- 957 173 400 - heavy duty filter kit

I got me a fine nylon mesh filter to try out on my PS-7310, have yet to give it some serious run time though.

I posted pictures somewhere here on OPE showing both nylon filters side by side, the 080 is much finer than the 011.
I can't find my post though, someone quote me if You want me up the pictures again.

Whenever I’ve tried putting in the part # for the fine nylon filter, 038 173 080, all that comes up is an air filter for a DCS34. I can never find a filter for a 64/73/79 saw using that part number. Maybe it’s a Euro thing only?
Nate @fordf150 and Steve @166 have you guys seen this filter?

The 038-173-080 should be the black housing fine nylon filter. Did a quick search on that number and see where some show it used on the dcs34/ps34. But it's definitely for the 64-79 series.

The 34 just used a piece of felt for the air filter.

011 coarse nylon mesh filter has white mesh and black housing, while the 080 fine nylon mesh filter is entirely white!

Cranking up my old faithful desktop PC, will upload pictures.

The numbers are definitely accurate, I bought the 080 fine nylon filter this year from Germany!

Hint, the 080 part number is listed as a part for the Dolmar PS-7310 & PS-7910 saws, not the PS-6400/7300/7900!

Switching over to desktop PC . . .
