Sup guys, tore down a 395 I got for some trade to go through it and saw some scuffing through the exhaust port. Took off the cylinder and there is a grip of carbon build up in the exhaust port and you can feel the scuffs. So new p&c, or new piston and use the cylinder? Would also like to know which kit or piston to buy. I know oem but are there others that compare or are better? Also would like to think what everyone thinks about pop up pistons, are they worth it stock? Thanks

The cylinder may clean up but with the cost of a new oem top end I think I would just go that route. The 395 is a killer saw and I wouldn't waste my time with anything other than oem. If the cylinder cleans up I would use a Meteor piston and run it like that.

Yeah I just bought one about a month ago to cut the big stuff I get in these end dump loads. Got lucky and got this one on trade for some work. It fired up, I never ran it through wood, but now I’m going through it and found this so I’m trying to figure out what I want to do. Not savy enough to do any porting yet, but maybe later on. Got a 24” tsumara bar coming in the mail it should be fun.

Sweet. Firewood or...?

Im no pro but porting is pretty easy to learn. Poke around here, degree wheel, and grind. That’s the basics anyway.

I’m down on the border in el Centro

I came thru there to acton a while back selling 4x4 junk

Yeah firewood, I’ve been watching a lot of stuff on YouTube and reading. I have a 372 that I am gonna put together I might try my hand at something with that one.

I think you will like it. I had a 2050 and a 395 for a long time. Too small and too big. Won a ported 6100 in a fundraiser. Use it mostly now. But also recently got a 2166 which is about a 372. Not too big or small.

I’d be up for a road trip and some wood cutting. Or I have a mountain of big euc to cut on down here too.

You did it the same with the same tools? Or what did you use?
That was the first cylinder I ever salvaged using that method. I started out with an Exacto and used all the grits chucked in my cordless drill. I've since been using a split mandrel and have a flex shaft in the dremel if needed.

I can get it, what do I do with it?
Dab it on with a Q-tip. It will eat the aluminum from the plating. But if there are holes in the plating, it can also eat away underneath.
Some sanding is still required, but I think it helps to prevent over-sanding in certain areas
