372 top end failure mystery

so i got this 372 in that didnt seem to have the get up and go as it once did( so im told) . i pop the muffler to find out if shes roasted . what did i find a great looking piston . so im think oh new ring blah blah . well no i found this ( see pics ) there is also one on the intake side ( i cleaned up the cylinder and there deep finger nail catching. any guess what happened im lost on this one . ( i kind have an idea but...)

yes below exhaust , intake side is not clean same gouge above the intake port .

Sounds like it ingested something other than fuel and air then...

thats what i kinda thought but wouldnt you think the piston would of be wrecked also

Maybe it happened before you got it and someone just left it and put a new piston in.

theres really not much at all top of the piston is a nice crisp brown and can be wipe off with a rag ,exhaust same thing

Maybe it happened before you got it and someone just left it and put a new piston in.
