372 top end failure mystery

so i got this 372 in that didnt seem to have the get up and go as it once did( so im told) . i pop the muffler to find out if shes roasted . what did i find a great looking piston . so im think oh new ring blah blah . well no i found this ( see pics ) there is also one on the intake side ( i cleaned up the cylinder and there deep finger nail catching. any guess what happened im lost on this one . ( i kind have an idea but...)

Whats the carbon build up look like on the top of piston and exhaust port?
