How sit my gas and oil jugs to keep them from getting smashed by a skidder.

MOFO saw day … my Hybrid and 360 both got good workouts dropping two tall Ash trees. The 360 did the limbing and small bucking and the Hybrid did the felling and larger bucking.

The first one was no problem, leaning the correct way, the second one (pictured) was leaning the wrong way and had to be roped. First I determined that my Maadsen Rope pull could move it, then (with a tight rope) I cut the notch and back cut, then pulled it over. I love that rope puller!

It was only about 18" at the base, but very tall. Lots of nice firewood from these two, and it will be good for this year!

Mike what’s tall? What’s average height for ash out there? We have it out here but it’s normally used as track bait.

Nothings tall over here compared to what you guys got. Closest thing we have is white pine or tulip poplar. Some of them around 150-160ft tall.

Some of the ash get real tall for how small they are in dbh. Some I cut last week were probably 70-90ft tall and maybe 10-24” dbh. Kinda sketchy to cut the dead ones if they break off. 60ft of top could come backwards and u better haul ass as soon as they start falling. I’m particularly cautious cutting them.

This dead ash split when the fork caught another tree. Kind of my fault. Split the whole 50ft of trunk in half all the way to the fork. Glad I got outta there as soon as she started going. It’ll be sold as firewood so it doesn’t really matter that it split but it still pissed me off. LolC595509C-8B06-407E-A65D-64B37A532A36.jpeg

My tall reference was in relation to the base, these trees were reaching for sunlight and had a small crowns.

My reference book says they get 80 ft tall, and this one seemed every bit of that. I actually would have guessed it to be slightly taller.

We’ve all had it happen, at least it split on the way down a fir can have half of it take off the stump before the other side is ready that’s a fun surprise that you don’t know what it will do.

There telling us to cut all the ash down while the getting is good. They figure if there’s nothin for the borer to eat they’ll die too and the ash can regenerate. They can sprout from the stump.
