We used to have the VW franchise years ago, through the 90's, early 2000. Glad we got rid of it!

I dont usually mind them. They pay well and its not just another brake job. Remember when a 1.8 turbo would come in with a vacuum leak! Overly complicated mess of a crankcase ventilation that was.

Detroit is not much better.
The new turbo 4 cylinder GM has coming in the new half ton trucks has sliding camshafts.
Yup..
The cams will slide providing either high lift or low lift for #1 and #4, and high, low and no lift during cylinder deactivation for #2 and #3.
I did some of the training stuff on it, and couldnt help but laugh at the trainwreck thats coming.
I will see if I can dig up pics.

Kind of like nissans variable compression engines. Seems every nissian/infiniti that comes into my shop is 3 quarts low on oil! Then they add an eccentric and a rocker to the rotating assembly. Add to that the recomended 10000 oil change interval, good luck!

Probably similar.
The variable lift used on some of the GM engines actually turned out to work, I see few issues with it surprisingly.

It's getting colder here though, which means I will start seeing 5.3's with exploded oil pumps soon.

Funny you say colder. Down here you know its getting colder when the RX8s start coming in flooded. God, those things are a pain to get going once all the seals in the rotor chambers get washed out. Lots of oil, new sparkplugs, a battery charger and lots of cranking!

What makes those 5.3s oil pumps go boom? Any way to get around it?

I sometimes miss having one of those.
But, I would regularly run out of talent doing stuff I had no business doing in the first place, and figured it should go while I can still walk!
I definitely miss it. A few years ago a friend took me out for a day on his KX450f (while he rode the 250 2 smoke). You talk about sore the next day! I was totally blown away at how far suspension tech has changed since my days. Only way I'd own one again is if I had the land to use it.

Not sure actually. They use 0w20 synthetic oil. It gets cold, the pump simply explodes. Vanes end up stuck in the pickup tube.
I will have to dig into my phone, I might have some pics.
I usually see 4 or 5 a winter. Feburary in Wi. Is a popular time for it.
