I feel the need to do a new build thread, nothing special, just an old burnt out 038AV with a good crank and bearings.

Here is the old girl, straight out the box with a fried piston. Pretty dirty but in overall good condition..

A good clean, a spare 52mm cylinder, a meteor piston and a caber ring and this is where I am with the pictures below.

Didn't have to clear the case to cylinder at all as some do but needed to oval out the cylinder bolt holes, I will show these when the top end is off again.

I have P320'd the crankcase since the pictures and it is ready for some 'Ford tractor white' paint.. I am going to leave the case halves together and remove the cylinder, clutch, oiler and all other parts beneath the clutch cover.

Aiming to tape off the flywheel area, the cylinder area, the conrod and most of the area covered by the clutch plate.

The paint is a pretty decent match and is tough as anything out there I have had decent results from this brand before (another image below)

Today I have been going through what I believe to be acceptable AM parts and necessary OEM parts.

Today I have ordered off Huztl the following:

Rear handle/tank assembly (build quality is said to be high on the 038's/MS380's
Top covers till I find decent OEM ones
Front chain brake handle
Wrap handle
Clutch sprocket retaining plate (not sprocket or E clip)
Upper AV mount (as they are gold dust as OEM)
Recoil (I have had an 038 one in the past and it was good from them)
Muffler (easy to mod and pretty much gutted anyway)

Now I am on the hunt for the remaining OEM parts:

Air filter
Bing or Tilly carb

Intake manifold and intake clamp
Impulse hose
Fuel hose
Ignition coil
Fuel and oil caps
Chain adjuster
Clutch cover with the Stihl logo
Lower AV mounts
Obv's a genuine 20" Stihl bar and chain

Anyway, this is where I am. And now I am playing the hunting game for the remaining parts. I am in no hurry so I will be buying as and when.

I will add some pictures of the paint process as I begin it some time this week hopefully.

038 Mag for the win...:pesas: whoever does not like them needs their heads re-programming..

Don't see these getting built on here very often...subbed:)
Not many thread on builds but a lot of questions on these mags.

I think the 038AV or super over here in the UK was the biggest selling saw for the 'one saw' firewood or farm user for well over 10 years. But finding a magnum is a different story.

What's the difference between an AV and a magnum? Don't laugh, I don't know all the ins and outs of Stihl's model designations.

AV was 62cc
Super was 68cc
Magnum was 72cc

IIRC

I do not begin to follow Stihl's numbering and marketing. For instance people regularly believe the ms390 is a bigger and better pro saw than a ms360. And the same with the ms290 and the ms260..

At least with Husqvarna the last two numbers roughly correspond to the cc of the saw and the xp now roughly denotes the pro level.

Woof. Big difference between them for sure. Thanks.

This is why we are Husky fans. They were designed by the Swedes who don't f**K around. :b1:
Ha ha ha! My simple mind does appreciate the Swedish way of thinking. I'm a fan of the German flavor too, just don't have enough cash to have a shelf full of both brands. Ha!

When the time comes I will DEFINITELY give you a shout Brett. I go into Saw acquisition mode after Christmas every year and I still want an 066/660 to build and test drive. Unless a 395/394 gets dropped in my lap for some unexpected reason...lol

I thought you had a 395? or is that a 390 wedged in that log?

Speaking of 372; you gonna run your 038 mag head to head with your 372 when you get it built? Would make for an interesting comparison given their different power personalities.
Oops, I need to update my saw sig..

I have canned the 372 as per raising money a while back for my wife's friend.

As you mention it I did have an 038 mag a while back when I still had the 372xp.

They were entirely different beasts, the 372 had a faster chain speed, the 038 was slower but had a far more torquey feel to it. .

Struggled to bog the Mag when leaning on it.

The 372 cut faster but you couldn't lean on it as much.

I figured it depends on your style of cutting to which is better.

I remember you telling me the 372 is gone now, oops. Time to get another! I do recall our conversation about the differences between the two, seems like a 288 vs 390 type situation

Yup, I will have a 372 again one day.

Yeah I recall a 288 or even a 181/281 seem to have a more torquey feel according to opinion over a finesse styled 390xp.

I could always be imagining this and talking absolute bull..

Nice thread. Glad to see you differentiate between oem and AM parts based on their "acceptability " and function. Too many guys use blanket statements like "all aftermarket parts are junk" or, inversely, "all oem are over priced and not worth it." The only way to find out if something will work--- try it out! Then, of course, report back to us on the forums lol.
