So the presets should all be the same (within each manufacturer) then. Its just the drivers that are different

Correct.
Only Stihl uses .063 presets on all their different gauges of chain (.050, .058, .063)
Except .050 and .043 Picco

I can touch up a chisel bit chain free hand for about 3 or 4 touchups before the angles start to go wonky. Then I put the saw in a vise and straighten out the angles leaving a good size ledge for the next touchups.
Some guys will true every thing up with a grinder then they're good to go again for another 3-4 touchups with the file.
