Here is a little perspective my brother gave me. A top fuel dragster turns around 9500 rpm, give or take. In a 4.5 second run it turns 712 rpm and has to be completely rebuilt. We use chainsaws turning 12,000 to 15,000 rpm and get upset when one melts down in less than a couple hours. Just saying crap happens and that saw can be made to scream again. My saying is, just throw enough money at a problem and it will go away. Contact the builder and hope everything works out to your satisfaction.

View attachment 36821 So this is the pic ya'll are looking for with the scored piston.

My only experience with ported saws is my 550xp. One of the reasons I went that direction was the auto tune... no room for user error.

In my limited saw tuning experience the low is easier to tune. The throttle response was good. On the high, it had that 4 stroking burble at full throttle out of the cut. But obviously it was running lean.
Looks like a clipped ring to my untrained eye. I bet the top of the piston and the squish band have little square dents all over from a little piece of ring. Seen very similar on a single ring 372 xp .

Thank you all very much for all of your wisdom and input. I spoke with Mr Tree Monkey and I will be shipping the saw to him. He says it looks like lean seize from the pic but an in person diagnosis is what we need. I think i'll ask if he can use a stihl piston as a replacement.

One thing is for sure no matter how this turns out, i'm going to buy a tach and tune each saw in the future exactly to the rpm suggested by the builder.

I'm glad he's taking care of you. But it doesn't surprise me. He's a good man!

Well after reading the replies from JMSsaws it feels a bit safer. I'll talk with Mr Tree Monkey once he has done his autopsy and follow his advise, he comes highly recommended.

Also, Tom (Trooney) has graciously offered to cover my shipping costs to get the saw back to Mr Tree Monkey. In no way should he feel obligated but it's awfully nice of him.

I'll keep this thread updated.

I meant that if Scott don't have time and doesn't care I'll put a piston in it.
The exhaust will most likely need raised or the op could do it.

I'm working 7 days a week daylight till dark but could find 30 minutes to put a piston in so he could get his saw going.
I know trooney and was trying to help him not take work from anyone.
Wow, what a stand up guy.... this is the reason I love this site....guys like you hep teach people, and keep people interested...I don't know you from Adam, but what a guy!!!!

Sweet man. Video when you get it back or it didn't happen. A tach and unlimited coils are your friend! (I think it's just easier to tune at WOT and listen for 4 cycling at WOT without having to deal with saw in the wood when tuning JMHO)

Jason @jmssaws wasn't kidding when he said working til dark... He just posted a video that starts with crickets chirping in the dark running a 661 under spotlight or whatever... Porting saws by the light of the moon.

I'm very fortunate to have found this site. I will post a video of the 066 cutting wood when I get it back. Thank you everyone for building such a great community. None of you know me but I've been lurking around here for a few months now. The first ported saw I ever bought was a MMWS 550xp and i'm hooked.

Good folks here. Even though there's gonna be an occasional mishap, being a standup guy prevails.

I have a feeling you'll be happy with the result from Scott. At least for me (and others here as well) my reputation is worth more than any saw will cost me to fix.

After Scott fixes the saw, it's private business between the two of you what went wrong.

Agreed.
When you most likely will never meet the person in trusting you with there expensive saw and there hard earned money, reputation is everything and takes a long time to get but one bad deal to ruin.

Not me. I have a nasty reputation as a cruel dude. They say I am ruthless. They say that I'm crude. But we had one thing in common, we were good in bed. She said faster faster, Brush Ape the lights are turnin' red.
