My initial thought to anything like this is make it go away.
Does anyone have a good reason to leave it?

Yes, well, part of it any ways. I like to take a plasma cutter to the end of the baffle and leave the sides.
This effectively helps pull the snaust out more gooder and I could explain how but am not in the mood for the guy that comes behind and wants to argue the point. At any rate, my testing shows it gives the saw more vim and vigor.
Here's one that has it done in such a fashion...

Well, would you want to be circumcised at the tip or the base? Lol
Just the top plate that has the three holes put in it will do nicely.

Took the heat gun to it until it got good and warm and stunk like burning possum

And with the trust rubber hammer, drove 1 side apart.

The bearings felt fine when it was all assembled, but apart the flywheel bearing feels very gritty.

I had an 064 lock up the flywheel side bearing while running, plastic cage disintegrated. Luckily no damage.

Is that outer ring missing on mine or does the older version not use it?

What part is that on your hand? I saw that in my box of bits but couldn’t figure it out!

Edit: oh it’s the binder for your file LOL! I have what looks to be an identical part. I think mine must be off webbing or a buckle for climbing. I think I threw it out, got a bit of a shock when I saw you “holding” it here! I just woke up,

Not every saw will have that. That washer came with the change of the carburetor mounting. You have to older version without this washer.

Correct Eduardo. Some of the older tanks didn’t use the outer, just the inner ring. If you look at your tank at the carb mounting face, the tank has an integral cast in plastic outer band.

Having the parts lists is nice but I've noticed it sometimes isn't correct, especially dealing with older versions that have gone through a few design changes and parts supercessions.

I scraped off the gasket, knocked out the oil seal and gave the cases a quick scrub.


They aren't any prettier, but they are cleaner.

While I was waiting for an ECM to program, I pulled the bearings off the crank

Not having a plasma cutter, I tried my version of Steve's baffle mod with what I had available.


I drilled the spot welds with a spot weld bit



Pried the sides up


Pried the front up and it promptly snapped off which was nice


Then with a grinder disc on my right angle die grinder I ground off the outlet side flap, and did a variation of what @Stump Shot mentioned, I bent the front down slightly and the flywheel side flap I left and kind of angled in that direction.


I doubt that tab will make any difference, but if something doesn't seem right once it's running, it's not as if it would be much effort to remove the muffler and remove that tab..

This is a fun thread. I just finished rebuilding an 066, previous owner used it and while it was still hot, decided to clean it with some ether. Fire ensued and by the time he got it out, most of the plastic and rubber had melted. On top of being melted, it was dirty like yours. I appreciate the pics you are showing. I could not figure out how to get the oil line out of the case, so i just cleaned around it, but it would have been easier to pop it out with a punch, will keep that in mind for next time. Currently working on an ugly 046 that someone abandoned at the dump. Very dirty, slight scoring on piston and cylinder and a broken rear handle, but having a great time working on it!

You can open up the hole if you like. Towards the back end will keep it mostly deflected. Or you can mod the deflector as well for more.
