Splines to keep from rotating during install and adjustments.
Hole pattern plus the 2 pins in the big end and the thread pitch make me think something gets set to a spec and the pins would be (re-)installed after final adjustment.

Tapered end. looks like an O-ring grove possibly.
The flats seem more likely to be clearance cuts due to layout of whatever this fits into.
The taper and seal grove(?) makes me think that you shouldn't put a wrench on the flats.

Holes in the mid region make me think of inlet ports.
Interesting that the holes aren't debured like the rest of the doo-dad.
Not sure what the four(?) dimples are for though.

Fuel metering/nozzle for a large engine?

Looks like a Retractable point scribe.
I've see fixed point versions with a Soap stone round kept in the other end by a collet and twist ring.

Yes, it is a pen style scribe.
The top is chipped and therefore dull.

My nephew found parts of a second one, but it is incomplete.

Chain break for old detachable chain. Think of the stuff before roller chain. Chain fits in the slots and you drive it apart to remove or add links. Probably more of a wall hanger type thing nowadays.

Yup, I used those link breakers regularly when I was young working on the local chicken farm. When the chain belt in the feeder troughs broke u had to fix um. Vice grip the chain to the trough on the upstream side. Bump the motor to give u some slack, and vice grip the back side. Put ur link in the holder, then very carefully hold the tag link in place and beat it with a 2# hammer like it owes u money. Oh and there is no getting it started. Its a 1 whack deal, or a finger. Ya, u get good pretty quick at it. man the good Ole days......that tool just took me back 30 yrs

So....I came across this when I was scrounging through some old cases for construction lasers, survey instruments etc., before the company pitched them. Picked it up mostly for cable and stand re-purposing, but also because I didn't have enough crap in my garage to trip over. Obviously a gear reduction crank winch, but its purpose evades me, 1/4" or 3/16" cable, any ideas?

Should have mentioned, thought it might be a confined space rescue winch, but the dimensions of the base are a little small for standard 2' dia. manhole covers around here.
