I don't know squat about bigger Stihl's ! I'm a Husqvarna guy at heart. These showed up at the local pawn today with all the markings worn off the metal tags. I have to assume they are 066's or 064's but don't know really. Looks like they have been well used and abused. So my question is what are they and what might they be worth assuming they need a total rebuild ?

They're both 064. The recoil cover from the 064 will not fit over the metal 066 flywheel.
If you want a fair estimate on value then you'll need to post up pics of the piston from the exhaust and intake, along with good pics from all angles of the case. Is the crankshaft tight? No bearing wobble?

Jim , they won't let me tear them down so I have to assume the worst.

mark how thick is the recoil that will tell the story a 064 has a thinner recoil about the same as a 044 or 046

Well, they're pretty used. The 064 hasn't been made for a long time, so they're old. Without being able to take a look through the muffler, I'd say $300 for the pair at most. I doubt the shop has invested much into them.
You didn't say if they run. Most pawn shops around here won't take in chainsaws unless they run and work.
If they run and they'll let you start them, you can check the oiler, clutch, carb and general condition. If all you can do is pull on the start rope and look at them from the outside, like you said (assume the worst)
Running condition = more value. Non running = don't pay much. Not more than the good parts you can see are worth.

They both will start and run, not running 100% but I also smell old fuel. Chain brakes work, seem to be oiling. I am still assuming the worse as I've had saws that would start and run but needed crank bearings and top end rebuilds.Policy is they have to be 45 days delinquent before hitting the floor. So who knows how long they were in the back if the owner was making payments on them.

$100 each...tops !

That pawn shop didn't give squat for them and I'm sure who took them in took the money and ran .
Great saws but getting long in the tooth and these have seen some use .

Well, make the shop an offer with two prices. 1. $xxx as is for the pair. 2. If I can do some simple checks on them and confirm their condition, then I can pay up to $XXX. Let them decide...
One thing with pawn shops is that it's important to deal with the owner to get anywhere, other employees usually can't make significant decisions. If they're out on the floor for sale and you don't need them too bad, waiting can help too. I've made an offer, had it turned down and made the same offer several weeks later and walked out the door with the item.

I have bought several saws from this shop, there is a manger there that treats me well. I just really had no idea what these saws where, or what the value might be. Usually he makes me wait until things have been on the floor for 30 days before reducing prices to what they should be. He wasn't in yesterday and I haven't been there for a while so I don't know where the timeline is on these two units. Sounds like the general consensus is that they are worth $150 - $200 a piece in the condition they are in.

Thanks Everyone.

Let us know the outcome. Interesting find. Those don't make it to the pawn shops out here.

I will keep everyone updated. Occasionally decent stuff finds its way into this shop. Over the last year among the sea of poulans and ms170's I have managed to pick up a ms260, 575xp, 372xp, and a 365 special out of here. They had a Stihl 075 a few months back but sold it before 30 days at a crazy price.
