It was a sad, frustrating day in the barn. Can’t help but wonder if that cage was showing signs of wear when Joe bought the builder from me. I gave it the same look he did when I pulled it out of my 288 when I first tore it down last spring. Spin check, roller check and Pop check...called it good. Hind sight is 20/20, Closer inspection is required. I’ll be helping with Parts cost, whether Joe likes it or not.

I'll need a cylinder for myself eventually but I'm not in a hurry. I've got Dale covered with the Mahle cylinder that was going to be for me. I'm going to port that cylinder for Dale and get everything sorted out and square with him before worrying about another cylinder for me. Thanks for asking though Joe :)
We can use my saw to test Dales cylinder once it’s ported. It’s the least I can do, still feel like *s-worde about this.

Yeah, been pretty busy at work these last few days. More coming, calling for 8-12" tomorrow.
Thanks Joe. Its an 87' 3/4 ton with a 4" lift and 10k winch on the front. There's a set of tire chains and a 65' cable hanging on the front also. Your truck looks good. I like the black on the bottom.

So after a busy couple of weeks I was finally able to get back into this 288. I set the Mahle cylinder I am now going to mod for Dale on my cases with no base gasket and set up the degree wheel. To my utter surprise, this cylinder timed 101/120/75 with .020" squish. Transfers are tapered with the end toward the intake opening at 120 and the exhaust end opening at 124. There isn't much I would change about this cylinder, in terms of timing, maybe bump the exhaust up to 100, flatten the transfers to an even 120 and lower the intake to 78 or so. That's about all I can see that I can do without getting base and squish cut.

Compared to the KS, it's easy to see why Dale told me this Mahle cylinder is very strong. This cylinder has not been altered in any way as best I can tell. Kinda makes me wonder if the Mahle 288 cylinder and it's massively improved port layout compared to the early KS cylinder is the reason for "HOORAY 288!"??

We've decided that in order to see some noteworthy gains with this Mahle cylinder, it's going to get the base and squish cut! Not because it's a poorly laid out cylinder, but because it seems to me that this cylinder is actually laid out quite well already.

Stay tuned :)

I wonder if the older KS cylinders can be ported to run as good as a mahle cylinder?
Well, the older KS I ported that Josh posted vid of compared to his new current OEM KS cylinder I think says alot. I would bet that in the hands of someone better equipped with the right tools than I currently am, it could be made to run just as well. I believe it definitely takes more work though because what you are starting with needs alot to bring it on par with later designs. I made some pretty extensive changes to that cylinder in terms of timing and area and it seemed to run neck and neck with Josh's current production cylinder that is stock with a BG delete only. Time will tell, Josh will be pulling his new KS for some work in the not too distant future and I'm anxious to see the port timing and layout. I still have the data on the old KS and my money says that the new KS will be much more similar to the Mahle than it is to the old KS.
