I am wondering what folks are paying for welding gas cylinders outright and for exchanges. It would be interesting to see the regional variations.

Just exchanged a 100% Argon and a 75/25 earlier this week. Both were 125cf, right around $78 each. That's in Northern Mi.

I purchased an 80cf 75/25 outright in February and it was $265 including initial fill. Believe it is $70 for an exchange.

I had a 125cf but the lease agreement changed to $100 a year! *s-word, it took me almost 4 years to use up the 125cf so that's why I just bought the 80cf outright. Apparently that's the biggest you can own?

Well about a year or so ago I wanted to buy a 75/25 tank outright. I called the welding supply store and they said there was a shortage of tanks and they were not selling any. At that point I dropped the subject as I damn sure am not going to lease any tanks. Back in early August I was watching a local online farm consignment auction here. They had some "K" size oxygen cylinders on it. The first one went for what i thought was cheap money so I got an idea. Since this was a Friday auction and the welding supply store was open I gave them a call. I just wondered if they oxygen cylinders could be be swapped out for 75/25. The woman said heck yes steel is steel. We will exchange them. Well I bought some later on the sale.

Well it turns out they can only swap them for a "S" size in 75/25. That is a bit of a kick in the shorts as the K tanks are 240 cu ft and the S tanks are 120 cu ft. Of course 120 is plenty but I hate to trade down. One company is back to selling tanks and they quoted me $545 out the door. Of course to exchange these I have to pay the hydro test as they are old. It ranges $25-$50 and fills ranges $70-100. Now I have not got a sold quote from the shop I like the best. I have a feeling he can get me fixed up cheaper.

In my opinion you made the right decision. I have never been a person who likes to lease, I prefer to own.

I pay around NZ $75 for 75/25 on owned bottle. The kicker is having to pay $125.00 to get it tested every ten years.

Yep a grammar/typing mistake.

GREAT JOB!! :D

Where would the world be without internet grammar and typing cops. :confundio1:
As a teacher, and also, as someone who types as much as you do, should either: (A) do it better, or (B) not get so butthurt when people correct you. This is a place for a bunch of guys to hang out and cut up. Lighten up Francis!

As I have said I was never an English teacher and I am far from "butt hurt". I was born without a butt so there is nothing to be hurt.

Sounded a little confusing to me, so I asked. Good that you can decode BillG. Next time you can head this all off with a PM to BillG and save us all the confusion and the wasted *s-word (whatever that is).

I did go to Airgas a few months ago and asked, and have since forgotten. I check craigslist regularly for a bottle to buy/own. I have seen bottles at estate sales, but they were not on my radar then. It will be the next time I see one. As I recall the gas is not so expensive, but the bottle cost or rental is too high and then have to invest in a Mig welder. Currently a flux core welder is fine for me.

Around the Knoxville TN area, anything over a Q tank has to be leased with most of the LWS I deal with. No more than I use on my personal MIG and TIG welder, I just keep one each of 75/25 and 100% argon and watch the gauges. They swap them and keep me in current tanks. Last time I swapped it was $52 for 75/25. At work we lease them, but it’s on contract. Let’s say I wish I could get my gas that cheap! The issue with them is how far they are away from us. They left me an extra cylinder of each last time they came.

I picked up an oxy/acetylene tank set for free at an estate sale a few years ago, oxy tank was a K size and out of date. Talked to 'my guy' at the local welding supply about converting to argon and he was amenable to it, took a while but only cost me around $80 for test, new valve and fill.
For some reason no one wants anything to do with the big acetylene tank though, not that I really need it...
Around here most companies won't sell you anything over an 80cf, though I've heard some will do 120's.
Never get a straight answer as to why, just cuz...

Earlier this year I ran across a nice deal on an idealarc sp-200 mig, big beast for what it is but for $400 came with two partway filled 120's, one 75/25 and the other straight argon. Also came with a nice spoolgun, regulator, tips, helmets, etc in addition to a pile of unrelated misc stuff, tools/tooling.
I'm due to fill the 120 argon so I'll soon find out what the $'s are these days, goes up a bit every time it seems.
Have a 60 with 75/25 and an 80 argon and just fill them myself off the 120 and/or K tank as the bigger tanks have always been a much better deal to fill.
