Anyone bought one yet? Opinions?? On sale today 79$ free shipping. Amazon wants 90$

So yeah I bought one. Figure if I hate it it’s not a huge waste of money. Maybe it’ll retire my harbor frieght grinder I’ve had for forever. Mainly interested in cleaning up rocker chains

@Philbert have you heard anything about these yet? I don’t browse the other chainsaw sites anymore. Just here. IMG_7509.png

I bought one and after some tweaks to tighten it up, it’s better than the Oregon grinder I used at work some years ago. I think it’s a good value, especially if you have the ability to do some minor modifications to it. I shimmed the play out of the hinge pin, stiffened up the dog that adjusts the tooth length, and changed the spring that controls the tooth angle (the original wouldn’t allow the clamp screw to hold consistently). Now it cuts an absolutely consistent tooth, although I do always check and adjust the length when I’m swapping to the teeth on the other side of the chain. I also had to drill a hole in the correct place in the plastic shield to get the tool in to hold the arbor still while tightening the nut that holds the wheel. For some reason it is WAY off.

Take the money you saved and buy a CBN wheel, then you’ll have a really solid tool for less than the price of a name-brand grinder alone.

About 20 (?) years ago, people on these forums started talking about the Oregon / Tecomec ‘clone’ grinders.

First ones I heard of were sold by Northern Tool, as a ‘Black Friday’ deal, for $79 (or $99 ?), when the Oregon 511A was $300. So, for a while, everyone referred to them as ‘NT grinders’.

Lots of threads on shimming or centering parts, getting wheels to run true, etc.

Since then, versions have been sold under many dozens of names, on eBay, Amazon, etc. So, it’s hard to know if they come from different factories, if they fixed any problems, what type of quality you are getting, etc.

I bought a used one (brand?) for $25, just to try, and I can sharpen with it. But it’s not as good as the Oregon / Tecomec versions. You can feel a difference in the parts, castings, fit, etc. Can’t tell about the motor.

But, a lot of guys feel that they are a good value: better than an HF, grinder, and more affordable than an Oregon one. Learn to work with it’s idiosyncrasies.

A big factor, however, is that cheap grinders typically come with cheap wheels. I’m not as much of a fan of the CBN wheels, but putting on good quality, vitrified, grinding wheels (Oregon, Tecomec, Molemab) will make a big difference.

About $15 each, on eBay, if you buy 2 or more (last time I looked).

Buy from a place you can return, if not satisfied. Some guys upgrade, down the road, and keep the clone grinders just for doing depth gauges.

I have one. For a guy cutting firewood it works just fine. Plastic guard went in the trash with the box. The joints are a little loose but as long as I do my part it makes a consistent chain.
