Ok guys, I bought a new 395 clutch cover for my 394. It didn't take me long to realize that there is a subtle difference, the chainbrake mainspring for the 394 cover is longer, and the corresponding spring cover is shaped differently as well. No problem, I'll just get a brake spring and cover for a 395 and all will be squared away, right? WRONG!

The spring is in fact shorter and seems to fit my 395 cover, but the 395 brake spring cover I ordered is shaped just like that of the 394 and does not fit the 395 cover, at least not without modification. The spring cover I got was backordered, so my dealer pulled one from a brand new 395 to square me away. (Kudos to GKS for that)

I have checked Partstree and the part number checks out, the picture of the part shown on the exploded diagram looks like the correct part... But here I sit with a brake spring cover that seems like it is 394 style... WTF am I missing here???

I suppose I will just have to get out my whizzy wheel and modify this cover to work. I'll have to drill one of the screw holes in the correct location to boot. What gives? Anyone have a clue?

Here is a link to the 395 exploded part diagram. If you'll notice, the part in the diagram looks correct and is the shape of the part I need: http://www.partstree.com/parts/husqvarna/saws-chainsaw/395-husqvarna-chainsaw-2003-10/chain-brake/

But if you click on the part "details" you can see that this part clearly looks different and I can tell you is the 394 design and will fit my old 394 clutch cover. Note that the part is positioned upside down compared to how it is mounted on the clutch cover. This part has that sort of tail that extends downward after the angled bend. The part I need would be absent that and have a shorter distance between the two lower mounting screw holes: http://www.partstree.com/parts/husqvarna/parts/503720601/

I think Husky has some wires crossed with this particular part. Again, this part pulled from a brand new 395 that my dealer has on hand is shaped like my 394 part while looking nothing like the part in the diagrams and will not fit my new OEM 395 cover.

There was thread on here or AS where the guy had the same issue. I can't remember how he solved it

Some pics showing the issue... I would note, the part number on my clutch cover is listed as "not available" on Partstree but it's there and the current replacement lists the part as for a 395.

Looking again, my 395 spec brake spring looks like it might be too long to fit in the clutch cover now...

Thanks, I'll see if I can dig it up over there. If I can find it I'll post a link for future reference here if management here doesn't object to it.

Hmmmmm...No luck on AS, but I googled the part number found on my clutch cover and another place stated it applies to early 394.

Once I get the old clutch cover off the saw and taken apart I'll compare stuff. If the new brake spring is the same length as the old spring in the cover I have I don't know what my solution is. I'm wondering if I have an older 394 cover here and the shorter brake spring and it's cover are NLA... :(

There's three different clutch covers for the 394/395. There's early and late ones for the 394, and then the standard cover for the 395. As you're finding out, the compression springs are a different length for the early and late covers as well as the spring covers. The early spring cover is NLA but they pop-up on ebay occasionally. The shorter spring can be had from other Husqvarna/Jonsered applications (I think the 2094 brake uses the same spring as the early 394 brake cover).

So a 2094 brake spring is what I need?

What about the spring cover?? Is that NLA? Looking at it I think I might be able to modify the longer cover to work.

Funny thing is that the new cover I got was advertised as for a 395. But I'm not calling foul on the seller for this, as I myself had no idea about all of these different versions, how confusing it is, and the fact that Husqvarna parts diagrams are of no help at all in this case.

Yep what he said.
I probably have the correct spring I'd you need one

That would be great Jason, as it appears so far I can't even figure the correct part number to source the correct spring.. Bonus points if you have the shorter spring cover too. ;)

If you have one or both I'm interested. Let me know what you want for it/them and I can paypal you.

Or I could return what I thought were the correct new parts to my dealer in exchange for the correct parts that still seem to be available.

Part numbers 503465901 and 503465401 on this page: http://www.partstree.com/parts/husq...qvarna-chainsaw-1992-01/chain-brake-assembly/

Seems these part numbers begin to change at 1996 and later. My 394 was made in '93. I'm guessing a PO replaced the entire clutch cover assembly with a newer style at some point since it has the longer 395 style spring and spring cover.

I was planning to give the AM unit a try but stumbled a cross this naked OEM piece for a pretty descent price. Figured I was all set to just swap my existing clutch brake stuff over...Lol!! I was wrong! (Ron White voice)

Ya know, I didn't find it difficult at all putting all the brake parts back in my original clutch cover. I'm confident I can put it all together with the correct parts in hand..
Helps alot when the brake spring housing is long enough for the spring! Lol!

iirc, the spring brake cover for the 394 is NLA ... the spring brake cover for 395 is available. I just don't remember the difference in styles lol.

have a look at my vid, around the 10 min mark, and compare. i'm rebuilding a clutch cover with the HL Supply one...
