Damn that runs sweet, undoubtedly ported. Lovely machine! I always go a touch richer that Brad has shown here, but that’s because it makes me feel more comfortable, not because the saw necessarily needs it!

After the year 2001 all Stihl 2-stroke
engines do have a rev limiting coil.
I was told so from a Stihl technician.

I like it so it wavers with just the saw weight...but chain aggressiveness will mess with you there too.

I have a Stihl 261 pre-Mtronic (early 2011 model). The coil in that model is not limited.

That’s surprising! I would have thought it does have.
When the saw was new & stock, it tached at 14,300 & was way too lean! After I removed the H limiter & opened the muff, it ran very well at 13,300-13,500. When well broken in, it was best at 13,500-13,800. I then had it ported by Brad Snelling. The optimum RPM then became 14,500! It will run 15,000 safely for race cutting. The tach has never "bounced" when it was used for checking where we were at.
Earlier on (late 2010) when Brad first started porting the 261, he thought that they were limited, but he felt that it did not occur until the RPM was somewhere north of 16,000!!
