The problem with lathes is there is so much I don't know.

You should know quality tooling is expensive - usually more costly than the machine.

That said, if anyone has any old Atlas/Craftsman stuff that they don't want/have use for, or has stuff that will work on my 618 that they aren't using/don't want, send me a message and perhaps we can strike a deal that will suit us both.

The comment on tooling costs just depends on the location .This area at one time had a zillion little machine shops that one by one closed .Stuff came up for auction .Depending on the crowds you could buy stuff a dime on the dollar or less .I once bought 30 or 40 pounds of used high speed steel cutters 6 dollars .A pallet full of lathe chucks for 60 ,sold twice that much by the piece piece before I left the auction and still had over a dozen left over .A Bowes and Emmes 20 by 48" lathe for 225 that weighs over 8,000 pounds .It's just being at the right place at the right time with the right crowd .Guido,Gary does it all the time . I used to when I had the time .

Stay with old American made machines! This 185.00$ craigslist find has served me VERY well for what it is. My dream lathe would be a Monarch 10EE or a Southbend Heavy 10. We'll keep the the old Atlas crankin' though!

Not mine, still in the process of cleaning mine up, but this is the same model I have. Bought the lathe for $300.00 with no tooling other than the three jaw that was on it and it had a Jacobs chuck in the tailstock. Found a steady rest and a four jaw at a garage sale for $125.00, some HSS tool bits at another sale for $5.00, and my Dad found three brand new South Bend dead centers still in the boxes for $3.00 ($1.00 each). So total investment sofar is $433.00

+1 on old American made!

Your Craftsman looks way bigger than my 618. What's the swing?

It will swing 12" over the apron, 48" bed, and 36" between centers.

There's also a couple other old machines here that I like really well; on the left is a Linley jig bore, and on the right is a Deckel universal stamp mill.

Monarch builds an excellent machine, I honestly think that I would rather have a Monarch over any other, even South Bend or Hardinge. I have a friend with a CY and it is a great machine to run, a lot of really cool features.

Cause they are worth it.

Yes sir they are, still personally would rather have a Monarch. Nothing at all wrong with a LeBlond, and not saying that I wouldn't own one if one came available and I could afford it. I just really like a Monarch, they are silent when running, the motor is WAY louder than anything else on the machine. Ford vs. Chevy, well, maybe more like Lincoln vs. Cadillac.
