Yeah I’m fairly certain it’s black gum. You can bust gum with a maul. I let it freeze. It’s nasty. Sweet gum is worse than this was.

Heavy or light wood does it cut fast or slow?

Heavy enough. I had more saw than I needed chain was in real good shape. So it cut well as most anything green like that. As far as splitting it I did get the job done , was work hard work. I wanna believe it’s black gum. I let the wood freeze and beat on it till it cracked with a maul. Then went back with a good sharp 4 pound axe . I’m definitely no Paul Bunyan. I had to make it a few separate attempts to get it busted. I’m 31 and in pretty fit shape. I don’t have a splitter that’s worth a quarter

Looks like that stuff in the picture. Funny enough story. Supposedly the old heads around here said it makes excellent axe handles.

This tree was also growing amongst several sweet gum trees. The ones with the nasty little spiked balls in them

Yes sir. That was it. Wasn’t a mishit. The handle was in the crack I was trying to get opened up. Mean stuff. Lol. But yeah maple makes a poor handle. Or at least the variety of maple I tried
