Yes, I was replying to the part about the 500i fanboys think it’s as good or better than the 661.

I don't dislike 500s, the guys wanted one to run a 32 on for big removals. We have 2 stock ones that have taken a beatin' for a few years and keep going.

I just think it's totally blown out of the water performance wise and it's really no better than the 70cc offerings unless you run a bar bigger than 28".

Agreed... i dont hate them, but i dont see thier place in the saw world for anything other than "ooh look its fuel injected".... a 462 will do pretty much everything that a 500 can do... so why have redundance in your lineup?

I think you can make a case for any saw if you want to, If I was a west coaster and walked all over the side of a mountain everyday and needed a saw to pull 105 drivers and didn't have the stones to carry 90cc I'd say a 500 is your ticket. Or in my world for big removals and you don't wanna drag a 90cc up it's a good choice. But in my personal experience if you're running a 20-28" bar you stand to gain nothing running a 500 over a 572/462.

Unless you just want one.

I think with the wide selection of 70cc+ saws I'm not going to be able to justify any saw purchases ! Lol unless I start giving them away!
I did think about an MS462R ,but I really hate the one piece top covers, even if they're better.

I can confirm that a ported MS462cm is nasty. Get one!

So is a mildly ported 460 big bore.... and it has a 2 piece cover to boot

Well, the story changed. It turns out Lewis’ wife had bought these on Amazon
But, hadn’t told him. So, Stihl rep is NOT at fault here.

So, here's an interesting one...

Local chainsaw carver dropped off 5 saws the other day for misc repairs. Stihl actually sponsors him for shows and he gets saws and parts donated to him.
These are older 170, 180 and ms250s

All 5 had clogged fuel filters and I'm out of that size so asked if he had any that Stihl might of given him. "Yes, will drop them off today"
This is what his Stihl rep had given him...
They aren't even the half decent copies, sheesh...

I have almost a full tank through my ms390 conversion. I used the Dukes nikasil jug and pop up piston.

What type of compression number should I look for? I widened both ports to 33mm, muff mod, timing advance.

A coworker has a 028 sitting around. What kind of mods and upgrades can be done to it? Do they make a big bore? Timing advance? Muff mod?

150-160 is what I would expect for a 290/390, but it’s very rare that I check the compression on an engine that wasn’t shot or modified.

Does anyone need a crankcase?

There are 3 different size cylinders they used. The 028 used 42 and 44mm, the 028 super had a 46mm with a little dome in the middle of the piston.
