Hypothetical question…

I have a great running 440, stock except a factory type dual outlet muffler.

I am good at tuning and honestly it meets my need for a “big” saw. I also have a 261C (and have owned a 241C and a 362C) and like Mtronic saws.

What in practical use would a 462C offer besides Mtronic smarts? Does it have more grunt or more power up top?

I always planned to just buy a 500i at some point so I still think about that.

I don’t “need” either but I am older and sometimes you just want to upgrade stuff.

Big difference is the fatigue factor, I would say your style of cutting would be the deciding factor. In other words if you only cut a little bit here and there fatigue probably doesn't set in after a sawing session, rather you are cutting all day for subsequent days at a time, then maybe a saw that's a touch lighter, with less vibration, starts easy, is more nimble, and maybe even cuts a bit faster might leave you feeling better at the end of your sawing session.
As an example, for myself, I love running my old McCulloch's, it kinda brings me back to my youth. That said, when I do it's not going to be much of a chore as I'm not going to want to run one very long being I have much more friendly modern options for an extended outing that won't leave my hands tingling when done.
So, to recap, imho it's something every individual needs to ask themselves, and be honest if it's worth it or not to upgrade.

The 462 I have is a joy to use and rips in hardwood but it is Mastermind ported.

If you actually use a chainsaw instead of spending all day online talking about it a ported 462 or 500 is so much nicer to use than old saws, I'd explain it but there's no point.

I remember when the old man would come home from a day of putting timber on the ground with a Mac 125. He sure was grouchy sometimes...

My dad and I cut or split firewood every Saturday my entire childhood. Homelite XL was the saw. I wish I still had it. If I find a nice one I would buy it to hang in my shop.

Homelite XL was the saw. I wish I still had it. If I find a nice one I would buy it to hang in my shop.

I found one at an antique store near me, paid $60, repaired the recoil, put gas in it and it fired right up and chugged along...love the color on it too!!

Yep, that guy is farter than most smellers. First part is why ported saws are special. Make a 15 lb saw all around better than a 18 lb saw instead of buying one. Lighter, stronger, faster like Anatoly.

I was getting paid $40/cord in the 80s to cut Almond and Walnut.
Wood sold for $70/cord direct from the orchard…U-haul.
