Good find, you'll love that saw. Looks like low hours but a fair amount of carbon. You may want to take the jug off and clean up everything properly. The muffler from the 5100 is non-cat and a direct bolt on. Check to see if the carb screws are glued in place. Mine was, and the adjustable carb is still available and doesn't cost much.

I finally received my SLE goodies for the 6421-7901 conversion. Sadly the piston wasn't the windowed style, but I'm gonna run it anyway.

Wasn't thinking, and forgot to order a base gasket. Obviously the 6421 gasket won't work, so I made one out of aluminum prune juice can, setting the squish to .020

Fun fact: I saved $30 on a clutch cover, buying the pieces individually, instead of the whole cover part #.

Last step is muffler modding the stainless cat muffler. I'm gonna go the MAPP gas route.

I am pretty certain that the slab sided piston is the more desirable one!
I do not recall why exactly though.

You got the best of both worlds.

I agree with you. The slab sided piston was the updated piston for these saws.

Whoops, I assumed it was the other way 'round. Glad to hear it!
Wanna trade?!

I have a OEM 52mm P&C kit with the windowed piston. 😜

Nah just kidding.
Both my PS-7900's run great with the windowed pistons.
Also, I pray I will NEVER need this OEM 52mm P&C kit. :)

haha thanks for the offer ;) but I actually got this 7900 running today! I wanted to give the threebond a solid 24hr cure, with the saw by the fireplace...

holy smokes, .020 squish makes for some seriously high compression! Haven't put a gauge on it, but this might be the first saw I'll be using a decomp regularly on.

I only ran the saw briefly, since it's gettin' late, but even with the stock stainless cat muffler, it's got amazing throttle response. Hope to pick up a MAPP can tomorrow, to gut the muffler, and finish up the saw!

The 6421 muffler was modded successfully today! Quite a pain to uncrimp, but the MAPP gas helped significantly.

Is there an easy trick to remove the "H" jet blocker plug? She needs a re-adjustment after the topend swap and muffler mod.

I didn't pull it when the saw was all disassembled, and the damn thing is stubborn20250117_172726.JPG

How would y'all tune a freshly rebuilt 7900? Mine is a 6421 so I believe its a 13.5k rev limit.

Figured I'd go way rich on H, and start to lean it to ~12.8k tach'd?

Then after some tanks, start to lean it up while making cuts, listening to the rev limiter?

Tune her just shy of the coil limit, 13.3 - 13.4 or so, and leave her there.
Go 32:1 on fuel mix for a couple tanks.

For break in refrain from multiple cuts in a row and long cuts.

Although some will say run her like You stole her.
Always two sides of a coin.

Worked on the tune today, and had a bit of a pain finding proper settings chasing a high idle... Until I decided a pressure test might be in order.

The saw passed the test, but I realized my impulse line was a bit dated, and might have been leaking air. Replaced the line, and quickly got a steady idle! Went thru a half tank of fuel, cutting oak cookies...Starting to realize why this saw has gotten a cult following. Great AV, snappy throttle, and a comfortable handle. Very happy with the power to weight so far. It pulled a 28" with ease

The oiled foam filter did a good job on air filtration, but I'm still gonna try a Makita fine white mesh filter first, before cutting up my top cover and filter mount.

A healthy 79'er has no issues pulling a 36" B&C fully buried as a work setup. ;)

Seems to me like a power-to-weight champ!

On a downer note, my two 5100's that I ordered from the UK got denied at customs today, so no 50cc dolmars on my shelf yet...
I have bought also a chainsaw from UK.
Nothing as problems with shipment and border control.
240$ saw with taxes and shipment is now 900$.

Do you know what they got denied for? Seems like the Chicoms have no problem getting their non-emissions/safety compliant knockoffs through.
I was just told thru eBay.co.uk that it was a restricted item, and that I'll be refunded fully. Probably has to do with the fact they were used engines, with potential oil and fuel still swimming inside.
