Huge flywheel for such a small saw.

Agreed.

Some more pics:

PS-39 and PS-390:

This PS-390 was the first saw I did a rebuild with. It still in my posession and one of the most frequently used saws I have. The PS-39 basically is identical to the PS-390, only different hoods.
Both share 39 ccm displacement and yield 2,3 HP DIN

On the subject of unusual pull starts ....some first generation of the 109,110,111,115 had this tooth engaging ring ( 10 on the ipl) to the outside of the flywheel ..It didn't stay on the saws for long ! my 1986 Mk1 111 has it and you have to keep it free of crap or you get no connection.

Very nice! Clean saws there. I wonder if the larger flywheel cleans the air of chips better?
I don't think so. I have had saws of this type as dirty as any you can find.
The ones in the fotos are clean becasue the shots were taken after I cleaned the saws ;)

And for the starter @Simondo metioned:

This is the flywheel:

flywheel_110_pre-1988.jpg

and this is the corresponding part connected to the recoil:

starter_110_pre-1988.jpg

When you pull the rope, the black ring protrudes towards the center of the machine and makes contact with the saw-tooth-shaped part of the flywheel.
Unfortunately the plastic teeth tend to wear off (as can be seen above) and after some time will no longer make a grip with the flywheel.
This was crap in first place and was replaced about 1987 or 88 with the well known ratchet mechanism still in use.

I like the newer 3 shoe clutch pack... need to find a couple of those for my 390/401!

FYI those saws are pretty fun once modified! [emoji6]

best thing is: They no longer strike the clutch-drum on idle and thus the typical idle jingling is gone
