I know some guys say but you don’t need spikes if your chain is good... some situations like felling cuts you have no option but to use them. I like resting the saw spikes on the log. Less effort wasted. Pulpwood... small trees... you don’t really need them however.
The lower tooth helps the saw not to tip over with a long bar.I think the bottom tooth being too long and pointed down ward is what aggravated me. Too much leverage on hardwood trees.
The large spikes also come handy when fully utilizing a long bar, gives greater leverage.
Bucking medium and small sized logs the large size spikes just get in the way.
The 3-point spikes are the best balance for bucking logs, felling and flush cutting stumps.
