Finally got me a Swedish Poulan. It's a 415 with a 505 top end, so I guess it's pretty much a 505. Runs really strong, it's a torquey bastard kinda reminds me of a 288xp I love it. View attachment 78375
Is that a Jon Red Poulan? Looks nice.

Lean?

Steve, Samsung On5 using Tapatalk
Nope, any fatter and it won't idle for more than 30 seconds before it dies from loading up. Starts great cold, it revs fast, it just doesn't have very good manners, it has two finger ports that I cut on the intake side to push the exhaust out the front of the cylinder.

I thought It was lean too and just acting weird cause of the tiny a** carb and boot cause I was having tons of trouble getting it dialed in. So I tore it down again and ordered bigger boot and modded the larger bore hdb carb. It has better manners now as far as tune and everything else, but once it's hot you have to put the throttle lock on and it will fire first pull, if not it will fire and die about 4 times before it will stay idling.

It's all sealed up new crank seals and Yama bond on the jug and head and it's sealed up tight. Just got to work a few bugs out I guess.

This project is worthy of it's own thread. Thanks for sharing. Cool project.
I learned a lot during this build for sure.

Here are some pics of the process.20170612_173917.jpg

Head bolted down and fit checked20170616_123948.jpg
Had to open up the cover to fit the spark plug and two head bolts, the elongated holes were because of the original hand guard bolts were there 20170616_130326.jpg
Hand guard relocated forward, more room for hands lol20170619_204823.jpg
See the head through the window as well as finished clutch.20170619_204834.jpg

Maybe if I was any good at porting it would run better. But that's the reason I built this model, you can find them literally anywhere for cheap. I have seven of this series, all in various states of modification research

Did you say that is a 3400 clutch?
Yes sir, and I made the window on the clutch cover bigger than it really needed to be, I just wanted plenty of room, the 3400 clutch is standard spline instead of small spline, way more options....

Yep, severely under rated and under valued.
